[00:01:34] Today's sermon comes to us from Octavius Winslow.

[00:01:37] This sermon was preached in the year 1867, and if we do a little bit of investigative journalism here,

[00:01:44] which we're known to do from time to time here on Revive Thoughts, we can pretty accurately assume,

[00:01:50] determine that this was preached, if not New Year's Day, then very close to it.

[00:01:54] It is a New Year's sermon, and we'll get into the significance of this sermon at this point in his life later on in the episode.

[00:02:02] But first, Troy, I have a new baby in my house.

[00:02:06] You do. I was going to say, don't ask me how I'm doing if you were about to say that.

[00:02:09] You're the one with the new child, new family member.

[00:02:12] Tell everyone about the new little one, Joel.

[00:02:15] Yeah, baby who was not supposed to be here yet.

[00:02:18] Thankfully, praise the Lord, she's very happy. She's very healthy.

[00:02:21] Everything went great. And honestly, at Lord's timing, it all worked out a little bit better this way anyway.

[00:02:25] But yeah, a few weeks before her due date, we woke up in the night to the startling realization that baby is coming early.

[00:02:36] So yeah, we sorted with some things, sorted with the in-laws, you know, to take, because we have a three-year-old son as well.

[00:02:45] And praise the Lord, labor came on and baby came out and it honestly could not have gone.

[00:02:52] Other than us not being quite physically prepared, like at home, just as far as things being set up and things being staged.

[00:02:59] The delivery process was perfectly smooth and baby is happy and healthy.

[00:03:02] So it's it's pretty great.

[00:03:04] But all that to say, I'm tired.

[00:03:06] We are.

[00:03:07] And my house is chaotic.

[00:03:09] So there might be you might hear crying.

[00:03:13] You might hear garage doors opening and closing.

[00:03:15] You might hear pots and pans being moved around.

[00:03:19] We're going to just we're just going to roll through it.

[00:03:21] We're going to press on.

[00:03:22] So the baby is already opening garage doors and playing with pots.

[00:03:25] And wow, she she really is.

[00:03:29] She came out ready to go.

[00:03:30] No, I'm kidding.

[00:03:31] And Joel, this is funny because for me, this is Christmas break.

[00:03:34] So like this is probably as rested as I ever feel.

[00:03:37] I mean, this has been great for me.

[00:03:39] The kids are sleeping in late.

[00:03:41] Like our children in my entire time of having them, which has been a long time.

[00:03:45] I feel like at this point they never sleep in there.

[00:03:47] They have always woken up crazy early on every break too excited to sleep.

[00:03:51] It's been a curse.

[00:03:52] This is the first break in my entire life where as I teach and as a teacher is the first time

[00:03:57] I've ever had a break where my kids are sleeping in like till like 730.

[00:04:01] It's amazing.

[00:04:03] And 730.

[00:04:04] Whoa.

[00:04:05] Don't get too carried away, Troy.

[00:04:07] It's big.

[00:04:08] It's big.

[00:04:08] And and I got to say, it's been really nice.

[00:04:10] And so I'm sure you're feeling the same way with a newborn in the house.

[00:04:12] You're probably getting lots of sleep.

[00:04:14] And so you and I are the same page.

[00:04:15] Well rested together.

[00:04:18] Yeah, it's odd.

[00:04:19] It's strange to talk about sleep because I I have to caveat.

[00:04:22] There has to be an asterisk next to everything, which is I understand I am not able to complain

[00:04:28] about any of this because my wife gets far less sleep than even I do.

[00:04:32] So when people ask me how I'm doing, how are you struggling with your sleep?

[00:04:36] I'm obligated to be like, you know, it's not that bad.

[00:04:40] Could be worse.

[00:04:41] I mean, my wife, she's the she's the real trooper.

[00:04:44] She's the real one that is functioning on probably half the sleep that I am have to

[00:04:48] sleep of like my four hours of night that I'm getting, which is a which is crazy to think

[00:04:52] about.

[00:04:53] So shout out to my wife.

[00:05:19] No, he was a really famous guy back in the day, but he's maybe not as well known.

[00:05:25] Today.

[00:07:04] Today, we're talking about Octavius Winslow.

[00:07:09] Octavius has quite a bit of similarities to D.L. Moody.

[00:07:13] You're going to find out when you're just looking at just his family environments.

[00:07:17] And he was raised in a large family like Moody.

[00:07:19] Kind of lived in a similar era ish to Moody.

[00:07:22] His father died when he was young, like Moody.

[00:07:25] And his mother was left to scramble to figure out how to care for a large family like Moody.

[00:07:32] He was the eighth out of 13 children.

[00:07:35] So huge family, right?

[00:07:37] Born in the year 1808.

[00:07:38] Their family traveled quite a bit.

[00:07:41] And it seems that that seems to be a trend in their family going back very far.

[00:07:44] In fact, what must have been his great great grandmother was on the Mayflower headed to America and is sometimes attributed as the first woman to enter America from the Mayflower.

[00:07:59] So that's that's a pretty cool lineage to have.

[00:08:02] Definitely a lot better than being second.

[00:08:04] Yeah.

[00:08:04] I don't even know who that person was.

[00:08:06] You know, we know first, but we don't we don't know who second.

[00:08:09] Exactly.

[00:08:11] Octavius's mother was born and raised in Bermuda.

[00:08:14] And although her family itself was Scottish, when she was 17, she married an army lieutenant who turned out to be Octavius's father, Thomas Winslow.

[00:08:24] But it wasn't until after they got married that she became a believer.

[00:08:27] She went through this conversion process and she says that it's from this inkling to seek out and understand this promise of God asking you shall receive is how she puts it, which is a kind of a beautiful picture of the Holy Spirit leading her to him.

[00:08:43] And this faith would end up having a huge important role in the 13 kids that they have.

[00:08:49] Sadly, only 10 of which would survive past their first birthday.

[00:08:53] And again, her husband would end up dying as well.

[00:08:56] So Octavius will end up being one of 10 children and no father, essentially, as he's being raised up in his family.

[00:09:05] Which is crazy to me that that's the exact same story as DL Moody has that we just covered a month ago, this mom with a bunch of kids that she's having to deal with.

[00:09:15] But let's talk quickly.

[00:09:16] The family itself was already suffering before they lost the husband, the father here.

[00:09:20] They had a large fortune when Octavius was younger.

[00:09:22] However, due to several financial disasters that kind of hit England in a short period.

[00:09:27] And if you know your history, this is the same period that Britain is fighting a war with America and that the Napoleonic Wars are going on in Europe.

[00:09:34] There's just a lot of change going on.

[00:09:35] And just kind of through circumstances outside of his power, his fortune was crushed during that time.

[00:09:41] You know, he had always had poor health, but he said he's going to send his wife and kids to New York and they were going to relocate to America to do business there.

[00:09:47] He thought he'd have a better time kind of regrowing, recouping his loss outside of Europe.

[00:09:53] So he sends the wife and kids ahead to New York while he ties up the loose ends of the business.

[00:09:57] But he doesn't end up making the voyage to America.

[00:10:00] He dies over in Europe.

[00:10:02] And not long after Octavius's, you know, family gets the news, her husband, that his mom gets the news that her husband had died, her youngest child, you know, around the age of one years old dies as well.

[00:10:14] So now Mary is a widow.

[00:10:16] She's 40 years old, a widow in a new country that she had moved to with the plans of starting a new life.

[00:10:21] She has no money, no husband coming to, you know, help get things going, grieving the loss of a child, grieving the loss of her husband and 10 children to feed.

[00:10:32] This just I mean, the reason we actually know so much about this story and what happened is because it meant a lot to Octavius.

[00:10:39] He actually wrote his family life story in a book called Life in Jesus.

[00:10:43] And he wrote the story from the perspective of his mom.

[00:10:47] He basically told his family's kind of life story of how she came to Christ, all this stuff, what he went through as a kid.

[00:10:52] But through the perspective, he was writing as if, you know, this is what mom was doing.

[00:10:56] And so he says that not long after that, there was kind of a spiritual darkness that covered the family for a while as she was recovering through this.

[00:11:03] But her faith led her out of that dark time.

[00:11:05] And I'm not surprised there was some darkness during that time.

[00:11:08] I think it would be pretty impossible for anybody to not feel some despair after having gone through all of that.

[00:11:15] Yeah. So being raised up, he recounts these realities that him and his siblings lived in.

[00:11:23] It was all hands on deck, right?

[00:11:25] Every one of the siblings had a pitch in to help make ends meet for the family.

[00:11:30] One historian said Mary had the youngsters out on the street of New York selling matches and newspapers.

[00:11:36] As soon as they were old enough to do such tasks, she set them to any job that they could tackle,

[00:11:41] gathering them around her at night for scripture reading, followed by good, sound, evangelical teachings and prayer.

[00:11:48] Eventually, they were able to get back on their feet and slowly begin to kind of start recovering their fortunes.

[00:11:54] When Octavius was 16, he stumbled into a revival that was happening at the time.

[00:12:01] And Octavius attributes this moment to his conversion time, his getting saved along with his two brothers, Isaac and George.

[00:12:12] And kind of a neat situation there.

[00:12:14] They were able to get baptized in the Hudson River.

[00:12:16] And after that, they began to regularly partake in ministry there in New York City.

[00:12:21] His mother wrote of him,

[00:12:22] My children are earnestly engaged in bringing sinners where the Holy Ghost is displaying his mighty power.

[00:12:29] They visit from house to house dealing faithfully with all they meet who know not God.

[00:12:34] So you can see that this gave his mother much, much comfort later in life,

[00:12:38] knowing that their children are walking with the Lord.

[00:12:41] You can really see how she recovered from what happened before.

[00:12:44] And also, what better praise if you can say,

[00:12:47] if you're a parent and you can say your children are out evangelizing and faithfully taking care of people.

[00:12:52] I feel like that's what we all want our kids to grow up to do is,

[00:12:54] you know, to be faithful followers of Christ.

[00:12:57] It's kind of a little bit unclear what happened from there.

[00:12:59] On the other hand, he began to write and preach.

[00:13:01] And he became kind of one of those classically super busy guys from this era where he,

[00:13:06] we know that he got ordained at a Baptist church in 1833.

[00:13:09] But we can't really tell.

[00:13:11] And it kind of, it was unclear whether he, if he went to London to go get trained,

[00:13:15] if he stayed in New York to get trained,

[00:13:16] because he received honorary degrees from different places.

[00:13:19] And that's the thing too.

[00:13:20] He received honorary degrees from different places, but not actual degrees.

[00:13:25] So it was a little bit murky for me and my research just kind of figuring it out.

[00:13:29] Winslow also, but he would work at a church.

[00:13:31] He kind of basically planted a church after leaving home around the area where he was.

[00:13:36] It did okay for a time.

[00:13:37] But Winslow actually struggled with what he called were trials of depression.

[00:13:42] And I noticed that, I was like, that's kind of interesting because he's a contemporary of Charles Spurgeon,

[00:13:46] who also was very famously somebody who struggled a lot with depression during that era of just being overwhelmed by life's problems.

[00:13:53] We've covered that on some of our episodes of Charles Spurgeon, if you want to go check those out.

[00:13:57] But the two men also knew each other and they actually had a controversy over baptism regeneration.

[00:14:03] They kind of wrote back and forth on it.

[00:14:05] So there were some, they had some, a tiff over that at one point.

[00:14:08] Now Winslow in the late 1830s, after some successful ministry, moved to England.

[00:14:13] And he was really successful in England.

[00:14:15] He was seen as passionate, earnest, just one of the great preachers of that era.

[00:14:19] And in the 1860s, he ended up pastoring a church that had both paedo-baptists and credo-baptists.

[00:14:26] And this is, you know, people who believe that you should be baptized as an infant,

[00:14:29] people who believe you should, you know, get baptized when you confess your belief in Christ.

[00:14:34] And this, he had up to that point always been a Baptist.

[00:14:37] So he'd always been, you know, saying you need to get baptized after you confess your need for Christ.

[00:14:41] However, having a lot of these other guys in his congregation kind of started to soften his views.

[00:14:46] And in a very rare turn of events, he actually left the Baptist camp and went and got ordained in the year 1870 as an Anglican,

[00:14:53] someone a part of the Church of England who would then now be baptizing babies.

[00:14:57] I think this is probably the only example in our show's history of a guy going from the Baptist camp over to the Anglican camp.

[00:15:04] We've covered people who've gone the other way.

[00:15:06] And it's much more common, I think, historically to go the other way.

[00:15:10] This is the first time I've seen it go kind of reverse, reverse here.

[00:15:14] So he bucks that trend. It didn't seem to affect him and like how faithful he was to God or anything.

[00:15:19] He just, he changed his mind on that.

[00:15:21] He continued in that until he died in 1878.

[00:15:24] Now, he also did some other things.

[00:15:26] He wrote a hymn book for his congregation.

[00:15:28] So, you know, he's got a lot of different things he had going on.

[00:15:30] Back to Spurgeon, though, I kind of left that note where it sounded like they were controversial enemies, but they were not.

[00:15:35] They were friends. They respected each other.

[00:15:37] In fact, in 1861, when they had the Metropolitan Tabernacle, the official building that became Charles Spurgeon's, you know, church,

[00:15:45] when it had its very first kind of opening service, they had remodeled it and stuff, made it bigger.

[00:15:51] When they had their opening service, Spurgeon had invited Octavius Winslow to be the guy who preached its opening sermon.

[00:15:57] So they clearly, they clearly were friends and got along and cared for each other.

[00:16:00] So don't think that just because they had a disagreement, that was, you know, the end of things, as it were.

[00:16:35] At Arizona State.

[00:18:04] So the time that this sermon was most likely preached was around New Year's time of 1867.

[00:18:16] And the way, the reason that we think that is because there's a few different things that

[00:18:21] are kind of referenced in this sermon that kind of date it, kind of tie it into a specific time,

[00:18:26] which is always neat to see in these old sermons.

[00:18:29] First of all, we understand it to be a New Year's sermon that's being preached during that time.

[00:18:35] You'll hear him talk about that.

[00:18:36] Also fitting for our air date for this episode.

[00:18:39] You know, it's around the New Year's time.

[00:18:41] And this will be the first episode of 2024.

[00:18:45] Secondly, he speaks about his wife who at this time would have passed away about two months before this.

[00:18:52] And so we can see him reflect back on his wife, Hannah, who he loved dearly.

[00:18:58] And he talks about and reflects about, you know, the impact that she had on his life.

[00:19:03] And unlike a lot of the speakers on the show, he never remarried.

[00:19:07] He stayed single the rest of his life.

[00:19:09] Him and his wife had 10 children together in a lot of ways.

[00:19:12] Kind of is similar to his mother's story in the fact that she lost her husband.

[00:19:17] Here he is losing his wife with 10 children, 10 mouths to feed.

[00:19:21] But at this stage in their life, thankfully, having to provide for them wasn't as dire a situation as it was when they were growing up.

[00:19:29] They had they were much wealthy in this stage than than he was when he was growing up.

[00:19:34] But after his wife died, he created a pamphlet called Instant Glory.

[00:19:39] And it has to do with her her sudden and instant death.

[00:19:43] Right.

[00:19:43] It's kind of a play on words.

[00:19:44] He wrote this sermon that we're about to listen to this New Year's sermon.

[00:19:48] And he also wrote a pamphlet that has a short eulogy of her.

[00:19:52] And this pamphlet talks about how her unexpected and quick death led to her getting to glory quicker.

[00:19:58] And the fact that he said he says this quote, he says, quote, instant death for the believer means instant glory.

[00:20:04] So listen to Octavius's thoughts on a new year and his new perspective on life.

[00:20:11] You know, knowing that his beloved wife likely passed away just two months before this.

[00:20:31] Psalm 3115.

[00:20:33] My time is in your hands.

[00:20:36] What evidence would we find of the precious truth contained in these words from the personal experience of the man of God who penned them?

[00:20:47] Reviewing the past of his eventual history, he could trace the guiding and overshadowing hand of his heavenly father in all circumstances of the checkered and diversified scenes of his life.

[00:21:02] And as memory recalled, the strange and momentous events of his life with what overpowering seriousness would the conviction force itself upon his mind that for the form and complexion of that life, how little was it indebted to himself?

[00:21:22] Circumstances which chance could not originate.

[00:21:26] Events which human wisdom could not foresee and results which finite experience could not determine.

[00:21:35] It would at once lift his grateful and adoring thoughts to that God of infinite foreknowledge and love whose overruling providence had guarded with a sleepless eye each circumstance and whose infinite goodness had guided with a skillful hand each step.

[00:21:58] With this retrospect before him, with what intensity of feeling would the aged king exclaim, my time is in your hands?

[00:22:09] But if David felt this truth, that all his interests were in God's care under his supreme direction, so warm a thought as life drew near its close, then how much more cheering may it be to us just to enter upon a new year of life?

[00:22:30] All whose history, to our view, wisely and beneficially enshrouded in obscurity, and all whose events from the least to the greatest are happily beyond our control, my times are in your hand.

[00:22:53] Who can give us this heartfelt, soothing influence, this precious truth, but the Holy Spirit, by whose divine inspiration it was uttered?

[00:23:04] May he now unfold and apply with his sanctifying, comforting power this portion of his own holy word to the reader's heart.

[00:23:15] The declaration that our times are in the Lord's hands implies the future of our history is impenetrably and mysteriously veiled from our sight.

[00:23:28] We live in a world of mysteries.

[00:23:31] They meet our eyes, awaken our curiosity, and then baffle our investigation at every step.

[00:23:39] Nature is a vast carnival of mysteries.

[00:23:42] Science is a mystery.

[00:23:44] Truth is a mystery.

[00:23:46] Religion is a mystery.

[00:23:47] Our existence is a mystery.

[00:23:51] The future of our being is a mystery.

[00:23:54] And God, who alone can explain all the mysteries, is the greatest mystery of all.

[00:24:02] How little do we understand of the inexplicable wonders of our wonder-working God,

[00:24:08] whose thoughts are deep as the ocean depths, and whose ways are past finding out?

[00:24:15] To God, nothing is mysterious.

[00:24:20] In purpose, nothing is unfixed.

[00:24:23] In forethought, nothing is unknown.

[00:24:26] In providence, nothing is reliant on something outside of himself.

[00:24:31] His glance pierces the future as vividly as it beholds the past.

[00:24:38] He knows the end from the beginning, and all his dealings are parts of a divine, eternal, and harmonious plan.

[00:24:47] He may make darkness his secret place.

[00:24:50] His pavilion round about him in dark waters, and thick clouds of the skies, and to human vision his dispensations may appear gloomy, discrepant, and confused.

[00:25:02] Yet, he is working all things after the counsel of his own will.

[00:25:09] And at the brightness that is before him, his thick clouds pass, and all is transparent and harmonious to his eye.

[00:25:19] And why does God invest so obscurely in the future?

[00:25:23] Wouldn't it make it for our present well-being, and wouldn't it be a satisfaction and a blessing if we could pull back the mystic veil and gaze with the foreseeing eye,

[00:25:38] an undimmed eye upon what waits on the other side of the grave?

[00:25:44] Remembering times in past where you might be ready to say,

[00:25:48] If I could have foreseen, I would have forearranged.

[00:26:18] God, your God, O believer, had in wisdom, faithfulness, and love hidden all the future from your view.

[00:26:28] You will remember all the ways which the Lord your God has led you these 40 years.

[00:26:35] How he has guided, counseled, and upheld you.

[00:26:38] He has led you the right way.

[00:26:40] In perplexity, he has directed you.

[00:26:43] In sorrow, he has comforted you.

[00:26:46] In slippery paths, his mercy has held you up.

[00:26:50] And when fallen, he has raised you again.

[00:26:53] From seeming evil, he has made a positive good.

[00:26:57] The mistakes that you have made, and the follies you have committed,

[00:27:02] and the blindness of your path, and in the sinfulness of your heart,

[00:27:06] have only led you to a closer acquaintance with,

[00:27:10] and to a stronger confidence in God.

[00:27:15] They have opened up to you new and more glorious views of his character and his works,

[00:27:21] while in leading you closer to the feet of Jesus in self-knowledge and self-abhorrence,

[00:27:27] they have unlocked to you a spring of spiritual blessings,

[00:27:34] fresh, sanctifying, and indescribable.

[00:27:38] Beloved, God has placed us in a school in which he is teaching us

[00:27:44] to lay our blind reasoning at his feet,

[00:27:48] to cease from our own wisdom and guidance,

[00:27:51] and lean upon and confide in him as children with a parent.

[00:27:58] The goodness of God to us,

[00:28:01] combined with a jealous regard to his own glory,

[00:28:05] constrains him to conceal the path along the way which he conducts us.

[00:28:11] His promise is,

[00:28:13] I will bring the blind in a way that they knew not.

[00:28:17] I will lead them in paths that they have not known.

[00:28:20] I will make darkness light before them and crooked things straight.

[00:28:25] These things will I do for them and not forsake them.

[00:28:30] Could the scenes of this year's history rise in their shadowy outline before us?

[00:28:36] Or, if it were permitted for an angel to divulge a single page

[00:28:40] in the momentous volume of events that will happen,

[00:28:44] then how might we shrink back from the revelation?

[00:28:49] We may close the book again,

[00:28:51] calmly wait until he should unfold its leaves,

[00:28:54] in whose hands our times are.

[00:28:57] How unfit should we be to discharge our duties,

[00:29:03] to sustain our responsibilities,

[00:29:06] to meet our trials,

[00:29:08] cope with our difficulties,

[00:29:10] and bear with our sorrows,

[00:29:13] were they all to confront us this moment?

[00:29:18] Oh, how kindly, wise, and tenderly does our Father deal with us.

[00:29:23] And in no part, no part of his providential dealings

[00:29:28] is his goodness more clearly seen

[00:29:32] in veiling all our future from our reach.

[00:29:36] Let us now sit at Jesus' feet,

[00:29:40] thanking him that the life which we now live in the flesh,

[00:29:45] we live not by sight,

[00:29:48] but by faith in the Son of God,

[00:29:50] who loved us and gave himself for us.

[00:29:55] But our times are all wrapped in impenetrable mystery

[00:30:00] and are yet in the Lord's hand.

[00:30:04] The words are emphatic.

[00:30:06] Our times are not in the hands of angels,

[00:30:12] still less our own hands.

[00:30:14] They are in the Lord's hand.

[00:30:16] It is an individual truth.

[00:30:20] We deal too timidly with our individuality,

[00:30:25] with the truth of God as individuals,

[00:30:28] with Jesus as individuals,

[00:30:31] with the covenant of grace as individuals,

[00:30:34] with our own responsibilities as individuals.

[00:30:40] You exclaim.

[00:30:41] I, a poor worm of the dust,

[00:30:44] not worthy of his regard,

[00:30:46] too insignificant for his notice,

[00:30:49] who have a heart so cold,

[00:30:51] a nature so depraved,

[00:30:53] and a will so perverse.

[00:30:54] Are my times in the hands of the Lord?

[00:30:59] Yes.

[00:31:01] Dear listener,

[00:31:02] you may humbly adopt these words as your own

[00:31:06] and exultingly exclaim,

[00:31:09] my times are in his hands.

[00:31:13] How comprehensive, too,

[00:31:16] is the truth.

[00:31:17] My times are in his hands.

[00:31:20] Diverse as they may be,

[00:31:22] whatever the shape in which they are developed

[00:31:24] or the complexity with which they assume,

[00:31:27] attractive or repulsive,

[00:31:29] bathed with light or draped with gloom,

[00:31:31] all are there,

[00:31:35] exclusively and safely lodged in the Lord's hand.

[00:31:39] Let us specify a few of these times.

[00:31:46] Our time of prosperity is in the Lord's hand.

[00:31:50] There are no circumstances of life

[00:31:53] in which we are more sadly prone to indulge in self-complacency

[00:31:58] than those times of earthly prosperity.

[00:32:02] Industry is enriched,

[00:32:04] and perseverance rewarded,

[00:32:06] wealth increases,

[00:32:07] and blessings accumulate,

[00:32:09] and the heart grows fat

[00:32:11] and kicks against God.

[00:32:13] The merchant's ship returns burdened with treasure.

[00:32:17] The acres of the tiller are fruitful,

[00:32:20] and his barns are filled with plenty

[00:32:23] or prosperity in some form smiles upon our path.

[00:32:27] And then,

[00:32:28] oh no,

[00:32:30] God has forgotten.

[00:32:32] We give to ourselves the praise of our success.

[00:32:36] My hand and the might of my power has gotten me this.

[00:32:39] But what is the language of God's word?

[00:32:45] Beware that you forget not the Lord your God,

[00:32:50] or else when you have eaten and are full

[00:32:52] and have built beautiful houses and lived inside,

[00:32:56] and when your herds and your flocks multiply,

[00:32:58] and your silver and your gold is multiplied,

[00:33:01] and all that you have is multiplied,

[00:33:04] then your heart is lifted up,

[00:33:06] and you forget the Lord your God.

[00:33:09] But oh,

[00:33:11] let us remember that

[00:33:12] all our past and all our coming prosperity,

[00:33:16] if indeed he will appoint it,

[00:33:19] is in the hand of God.

[00:33:22] It is his wisdom that suggests our plans.

[00:33:26] It is his power that guides,

[00:33:30] and it is his goodness that causes them to succeed.

[00:33:33] Every flower that blooms in our path,

[00:33:37] every smile that gladdens it,

[00:33:39] every mercy that bedews it,

[00:33:41] yes,

[00:33:41] every good and every perfect gift

[00:33:45] is from above

[00:33:46] and comes down from the Father of lights.

[00:33:50] Oh,

[00:33:50] for grace to recognize God in our mercies,

[00:33:54] for a heart lifted up

[00:33:56] in holy returns of love,

[00:33:58] gratitude,

[00:33:59] and praise.

[00:34:00] How much sweeter will be our sweets.

[00:34:04] How much more blessed are blessings,

[00:34:06] and how endeared are endearments,

[00:34:09] seeing them all dropping

[00:34:11] from the outstretched,

[00:34:13] magnificent hand

[00:34:16] gracious,

[00:34:17] and bountiful Father.

[00:34:18] But there are times of adversity,

[00:34:22] and they too are in the Lord's hand.

[00:34:26] Just as every sunbeam that brightens

[00:34:29] comes from God,

[00:34:31] so does every cloud that darkens.

[00:34:34] We are subject to great and sudden reverses

[00:34:38] in our earthly condition.

[00:34:39] Joy is often succeeded by grief,

[00:34:43] prosperity by adversity.

[00:34:45] We are on the pinnacle today,

[00:34:47] tomorrow at its bottom.

[00:34:49] Oh,

[00:34:49] what a change may one event

[00:34:51] and in one moment create.

[00:34:53] A storm,

[00:34:55] a fire,

[00:34:56] a slight swing of funds.

[00:34:58] The morning's mill,

[00:34:59] the casual meeting of a friend,

[00:35:01] may suddenly clothe our life

[00:35:03] with mourning.

[00:35:05] But beloved,

[00:35:07] all is from the Lord.

[00:35:09] Affliction comes not

[00:35:12] nor does trouble spring

[00:35:53] Some treasures

[00:36:04] Some fond expectation

[00:38:22] many hard-fought

[00:38:24] many fiery darts

[00:38:26] and many desperate

[00:38:27] wounds

[00:38:28] and momentary defeats

[00:38:30] in the Christian's life.

[00:38:31] Taking advantage

[00:38:32] of the spiritual mist

[00:38:34] which may hover

[00:38:35] around the mind

[00:38:36] in the time

[00:38:37] of confusion

[00:38:38] and gloomy

[00:38:39] providences,

[00:38:40] the foe

[00:38:41] with stealthy attack

[00:38:42] may rush upon

[00:38:43] the soul

[00:38:44] like a flood.

[01:04:51] Should we doubt the promises of him who commands us to sleep without fear?

[01:04:56] Can the devil do more than kill us?

[01:04:58] Christ will not be lacking in the work of justice and truth.

[01:05:02] He lives.

[01:05:04] He reigns.

[01:05:05] What fear then can we have?

[01:05:08] God is powerful to raise back up his cause if it is overthrown.

[01:05:13] To make it progress, it remains motionless.

[01:05:17] And if we are not worthy of it, he will do it by others.

[01:05:22] For our cause is in the very hands of him who can say,

[01:05:26] No one will pluck it out of my hands.

[01:05:29] I would not have it in my own hand, and it would not be desirable if it were so.

[01:05:36] I have had many things in my hands, and I have lost them all.

[01:05:41] But whatever I have been able to place in God's, I still possess.

[01:05:48] All in his hand.

[01:05:51] Oh, yes, beloved listener, thank God that your times, your interests, your salvation are all out of your hands,

[01:05:59] and out of the hands of all creatures supremely and safely in his.

[01:06:06] Forward in the path of duty, of labor and suffering.

[01:06:10] Aim to resemble Christ more closely in your disposition, your spirit, your whole life.

[01:06:16] Soon it will be said, the master has come and calls for you.

[01:06:20] He is coming.

[01:06:22] Prepare to meet your God.

[01:06:24] Let your motto for this year be forward.

[01:06:28] Patient in endurance.

[01:06:30] Submissive in suffering.

[01:06:32] Content with God's allotment.

[01:06:34] Zealous, prayerful, and watchful.

[01:06:37] Be found standing in your lot at the end of the days.

[01:06:42] Trust God implicitly for the future.

[01:06:46] No sorrow comes but which will open some sweet spring of comfort.

[01:06:51] No necessity transpires except that which comes.

[01:06:56] From a father's care, no affliction falls except what will be attended with the Savior's tenderest sympathy.

[01:07:05] In him, all meet confluence of grace for your hourly momentary need.

[01:07:13] Let your constant prayer be, hold me up and I will be safe.

[01:07:19] Let your daily precept be, casting all your cares upon him for he cares about you.

[01:07:25] And then leave God to fulfill, as most faithfully he will, his own gracious, precious promise.

[01:07:34] As your days, so will your strength be.

[01:07:37] And so walking with God through this veil of tears until you exchange sorrow for joy, suffering for ease, sin for purity, labor for rest, conflict for glory,

[01:07:54] and all earth's checkered, gloomy scenes for the changeless, cloudless happiness and glory of heaven.

[01:08:20] The sermon was actually, it's a New Year's sermon, but it's titled, Time is in Your Hands.

[01:08:25] And there's even a part where he says,

[01:08:27] Dear child of God, your afflictions, your trials, your crosses, your losses, your sorrows,

[01:08:31] all are in your heavenly Father's hand, and they cannot come until sent by him.

[01:08:36] Bow that stricken heart, yield that tempest-tossed soul to his sovereign disposal,

[01:08:41] to his calm, righteous sway,

[01:08:42] and the submissive spirit and language of your suffering Savior, your will, O Father, not mine, be done.

[01:08:47] My tines of sadness and of grief are in your hand.

[01:08:51] I mean, that is a powerful statement.

[01:08:54] When you know, when you remember that it was very, very likely that this sermon was preached

[01:08:58] only two months after his own beloved wife, whom he never remarried again.

[01:09:02] He loved her, had ten children with her, had just passed on.

[01:09:05] And he's able to say, These hard times are truly in your hands.

[01:09:10] And he says, I mean, the whole sermon, I think, is just a powerful praise to how God is truly in control of everything.

[01:09:17] Our frustrating times, our spiritual depression times, everything is truly in the hands of your God.

[01:09:24] I think that what better way to start the new year?

[01:09:28] Winslow had the right idea when he preached that sermon 150 years ago.

[01:09:31] This is a good way to start the new year.

[01:09:33] Let's think about how everything is in God's hands.

[01:09:35] And I think it's also a good time, a good way for us to remind ourselves at the beginning of a new year as well.
