[00:01:21] I'm doing pretty good.

[00:01:23] Long time no listen.

[00:01:26] No, hear your voice.

[00:01:27] No, listen.

[00:01:28] No, listen.

[00:01:29] So you're been, you don't listen to my show I see how this is.

[00:01:32] Oh, man, I'll do it.

[00:01:33] No, no, no, no, no, it's a person thing.

[00:01:36] It's an interaction.

[00:01:38] Long time no interaction I should say.

[00:01:40] That's true.

[00:01:41] What's the temperature there guys?

[00:01:43] It's hot.

[00:01:44] It feels hot.

[00:01:45] It needs to rain.

[00:01:46] Has it started burning yet?

[00:01:48] For the rainy season?

[00:01:50] Sort of like there was like a good two weeks where it felt like the rainy season had started

[00:01:54] and then this last week it was kind of like the rainy season was like, well, I'm going

[00:01:58] to take a vacation.

[00:01:59] I've been working hard for a week and a half.

[00:02:01] It really doesn't feel like it's really started started.

[00:02:04] When the rainy season is real, it goes on for six to 12 hours at a time just torrential down,

[00:02:12] just downpours like you can't even imagine.

[00:02:15] I mean, it's just unbelievable.

[00:02:17] And I feel like it really still, even though it should have started by now, it really

[00:02:20] still hasn't gotten to that level quite yet.

[00:02:23] I'm not complaining too hard though.

[00:02:25] I am right now.

[00:02:26] It's hot in this room.

[00:02:27] What about you, Joel?

[00:02:28] Is it cold and snowy there in Kansas City?

[00:02:30] You know, it's actually been a pretty mild December so far.

[00:02:33] We've been like cruising in the 40s.

[00:02:36] You know, right?

[00:02:37] The highs are in the 40s most days which is, which is, I honestly, a pretty nice December.

[00:02:42] So I'm sure when January comes we'll get slammed with, you know, it'll just be in the teens

[00:02:47] and then on, but I'm enjoying the 40s.

[00:02:50] The sun comes out.

[00:02:51] It's not too bad.

[00:02:52] You can go for a walk in it until you get to that season of Kansas City weather where it's

[00:02:57] just all ice and snow and it's impossible to drive or do anything for like two months.

[00:03:02] And the wind.

[00:03:03] Yeah.

[00:03:04] I mean, if you enjoy seasons, if you want to experience what all four seasons have to offer,

[00:03:09] have to offer in the full list, move to the Kansas City area because we get,

[00:03:14] we get all the spring, all of summer, all the fall, all of winter pretty equally, I feel like.

[00:03:18] Yeah, but I mean, you don't have all the seasons because you don't have for any season.

[00:03:22] Of course, we don't right now either so that's, you know, that's kind of wrong.

[00:03:25] I don't think any of us are selling our geographic locations.

[00:03:28] People are listening and listening going, all right, so don't move to Indonesia and don't move to Kansas City.

[00:03:32] That's what I'm forward to here.

[00:03:33] Here I come.

[00:03:34] Here I come.

[00:03:35] That's right.

[00:03:36] All right.

[00:03:37] Well, hey, let's go ahead and get started every year.

[00:03:38] We do this.

[00:03:39] And we'd have done this with at least before we didn't have at least on last year.

[00:03:42] I don't know why, but we didn't have you on last year at least.

[00:03:45] But we do a top five best episodes and like I said in the intro, the goal of this is just to kind of give,

[00:03:51] a lot of new listeners, they wonder where do I start with our show.

[00:03:54] We have hundreds of episodes with, with Elisa's show, this like 60 or 70 episodes.

[00:03:58] Where do you start with these big long shows?

[00:04:00] It helps maybe if you have a guide map to kind of be that, that, that where you get started.

[00:04:05] And for the people who have listened the whole year, you're dedicated.

[00:04:08] You know every episode.

[00:04:09] You're, you're right there with us.

[00:04:11] This is just a chance for you to see where the five, where your five favorites,

[00:04:14] the same five favorites that we had now with that said,

[00:04:18] at least had this idea and I think it's a good idea to throw in a little game.

[00:04:22] So throwing a little, it's a little something for everybody to listen to as we go.

[00:04:25] So during this episode,

[00:04:27] I'm going to be dropping some church history trivia questions

[00:04:30] and giving Joel and Elise opportunities to see if they can get the answers correct.

[00:04:36] And we will see who comes out on top at the end of this episode.

[00:04:40] I will say if you're a gambling person,

[00:04:44] you know, I don't, I don't want to say, I don't want to tip the scales here,

[00:04:47] but the odds might be more in one direction than the other.

[00:04:49] But we're going to see, we're going to see Joel, how do you feel?

[00:04:51] Feeling confident tonight that you got this game?

[00:04:53] I'm feeling about as unconfident as one person.

[00:04:57] I feel like our listeners,

[00:05:00] our listeners have, by this point, come to understand our dynamic here.

[00:05:04] You're the super brainy genius that remembers every church history detail

[00:05:10] and understands everything.

[00:05:12] And I'm kind of along for the ride.

[00:05:14] I enjoy it.

[00:05:15] I really enjoy it, but I don't remember how...

[00:05:19] I'm only going to do my best, but we'll see here.

[00:05:23] Excellent.

[00:05:24] That is the attitude you want to have at the beginning of this church.

[00:05:27] History trivia challenges.

[00:05:29] It's, I don't know.

[00:05:30] We'll see.

[00:05:31] I mean, you say all that.

[00:05:32] He's probably going to smoke me.

[00:05:33] All right.

[00:05:34] Are you guys ready for your first question?

[00:05:36] Actually, I got one already locked and loaded right now.

[00:05:38] If you guys are in...

[00:05:39] Let's do it.

[00:05:40] All right.

[00:05:41] I'm going to throw this out there.

[00:05:42] Just make a buzzer sound.

[00:05:43] Let's see, let's see, let's see, a little like a beat or something.

[00:05:45] You can do your best here.

[00:05:46] And that'll be my cue to throw it to one of you.

[00:05:48] All right.

[00:05:49] Okay.

[00:05:50] All right.

[00:05:51] First question.

[00:05:52] Before we've even hit our sermons, here we go.

[00:05:53] First question.

[00:05:54] Question number one on church history trivia challenge night is...

[00:05:58] In what year was the Great London Fire?

[00:06:01] In fire.

[00:06:02] In what year?

[00:06:03] Oh, oh, oh.

[00:06:04] Oh, beat, beat.

[00:06:05] Is that...

[00:06:06] Oh, hey, is that Joel coming up on the white card in this six scenario?

[00:06:10] Uh, 1666.

[00:06:11] Uh, ding, ding, ding, ding, ding, ding.

[00:06:13] That one does go to Joel.

[00:06:14] You know, I feel like that's unfair.

[00:06:15] It is not unfair.

[00:06:16] Yeah.

[00:06:17] Just as I rambled about that fire to you at least, you certainly had his many opportunities

[00:06:25] as Joel did.

[00:06:26] Fair point.

[00:06:27] All right.

[00:06:28] Well, that was unexpected.

[00:06:29] That unconfidence, he suddenly shook up the board.

[00:06:31] All right.

[00:06:32] Uh, with that said, let's go ahead and start.

[00:06:35] What is your number five sermon?

[00:06:37] Joel, since you took the lead, why don't you sermon or martyr in missionary?

[00:06:41] What is your number five episode for the year?

[00:06:44] Yeah.

[00:06:45] It's a tough one.

[00:06:47] I don't know.

[00:06:48] I don't know if I would necessarily order my suggestions in a strict linear best to worst,

[00:06:54] but more of just like maybe top five ones that I liked this year type of thing.

[00:07:00] You know, I think that would be, I wanted to say that too, because I don't know

[00:07:04] that like any of these episodes for me, especially probably probably like the bottom four,

[00:07:09] like there might be one that I'm really feeling tops about that.

[00:07:11] I think that was just it was pretty good.

[00:07:13] But yeah, maybe there's I would and then four runner ups type.

[00:07:17] Yeah, that might be a good way to say it.

[00:07:19] Like they're all good.

[00:07:20] And it's like how do you compare four and five?

[00:07:22] I don't know, it's not like this one was fourth best.

[00:07:24] It's clear.

[00:07:25] It says I want to agree with you on that.

[00:07:27] Since it's fresh on the memory because we just recorded it earlier this month,

[00:07:32] I really liked our moody episode this year titled What Do You Think of Christ?

[00:07:36] I had fun talking about it in the Prologue section and I like listening to Dustin read it.

[00:07:43] I thought it looked pretty good.

[00:07:45] Yeah, he did a great job.

[00:07:47] And two, it was fun for us to go back and do DL Moody.

[00:07:51] It's been a long time.

[00:07:53] I didn't realize until I was playing that episode together,

[00:07:55] how much of DL Moody's story?

[00:07:56] You know, you say I always have these church history, trivia facts,

[00:07:58] but actually forgotten a lot of his story because it's just been I think he's been

[00:08:02] genuinely like two or three years since we've done an episode on him.

[00:08:05] And it was really fun.

[00:08:06] It was a fun to refresh on that.

[00:08:08] Just just reading through how hard his life was and just the way God used him.

[00:08:14] He has an amazing story.

[00:08:15] So yeah, that's a really good one.

[00:08:17] And I agree that was when we put out if you're listening to this with us in real time.

[00:08:21] That was when we put out most recently or one of my most recent episodes.

[00:08:24] And if you're listening later, hey, go check it out.

[00:08:27] It's a good one to check out.

[00:08:28] All right, at least number five in your Mars Emissionaries categories list

[00:08:32] whatever you want to call it.

[00:08:33] All right, I think I'm going to have to go with Alan Gardner, not in vain.

[00:08:40] Because I think his story was was one of those that it could have been really depressing

[00:08:49] because he kind of dies and seemingly as a failure.

[00:08:54] But then there's a lot of fruit from his from his ministry not necessarily in the way that we would see it.

[00:09:00] I'm not going to spoil it for you, but it's just he goes all over the place.

[00:09:03] He doesn't really he doesn't really see a lot of fruit in his ministry.

[00:09:08] And even after his death, there's questionable fruit.

[00:09:12] And then, but it doesn't matter because it's still a great story.

[00:09:14] And he has he has a great heart for people.

[00:09:16] So I like that.

[00:09:17] All right.

[00:09:18] That's a good one.

[00:09:19] Oh, by you Alan Gardner Alan Gardner's story.

[00:09:22] Just piggybacking with me with Elise here.

[00:09:25] I was sitting here on my daughter's name is it's a depressing story.

[00:09:30] But I think at least at a really good job telling the full history of it in a way that I was I did I had heard the story before.

[00:09:37] That that was the one who is like telling at least for a year like, oh, you got to do this story.

[00:09:40] And she was like a guy star from the jungle.

[00:09:42] I don't know how much I want to do that one's kind of pressing and she did a really good job filling in details.

[00:09:47] I had not heard before myself.

[00:09:49] For me number five.

[00:09:51] I think I got to go with this is kind of a weird one, but I feel like whenever we do these mine always kind of are.

[00:09:56] F. Ram the Syrian, the one that came out over the summer.

[00:09:59] It was this like 1600 year old sermon that the reason I liked it so much.

[00:10:04] And I think it's just a cool one is that I feel like an embodies the revived thoughts vibe of like finding some history that nobody's talked about or looked at in a long time.

[00:10:13] Dusting it off and sending out to the world.

[00:10:16] And I really enjoyed the sermon.

[00:10:17] It was I mean, like a sermon on the end times told from the perspective of somebody who's like in the Syrian church 1500 years ago.

[00:10:24] And yet despite how we should feel so extremely disconnected from something like that.

[00:10:30] I felt like it was a really good sermon.

[00:10:32] Convicting people were like, man, I was convicted by that sermon.

[00:10:34] It was good and I think it was just really cool that we got to put that one out.

[00:10:37] So that's probably my number five.

[00:10:39] Awesome.

[00:10:40] All right.

[00:10:41] All right.

[00:10:42] All right.

[00:10:43] We got the ball rolling.

[00:10:44] Ray for church history trivia number two.

[00:10:45] Lay it on me.

[00:10:47] You ready?

[00:10:48] Okay.

[00:10:49] I'm going to say that the name is missionary.

[00:10:51] Happens to share the same name as a Marvel comic book character.

[00:11:01] At least should not be looking surprised.

[00:11:03] That is what he does.

[00:11:05] He's got the same name.

[00:11:07] Oh gosh.

[00:11:08] Peter.

[00:11:09] Marvels.

[00:11:10] Oh gosh.

[00:11:11] Oh no.

[00:11:12] Okay, I know Joe has got to be working with Google that he figured that out.

[00:11:15] But he is correct.

[00:11:17] That's Joe two point.

[00:11:19] He is an episode.

[00:11:20] Yeah, no, he's right.

[00:11:22] There's an episode called the at least did Peter Parker, a friendly neighborhood doctor.

[00:11:27] I'm going to call it almost 10 o'clock.

[00:11:29] It's not that is see see.

[00:11:31] Uh huh.

[00:11:32] I was literally.

[00:11:34] I had I was just brainstorming.

[00:11:36] I was just bringing it up.

[00:11:38] We heard that tight.

[00:11:39] We heard that clattering of a keyboard.

[00:11:41] That Google now is going to be.

[00:11:43] I mean, this is not like in good for you.

[00:11:45] I can't believe that.

[00:11:46] That was not how I expected that to go at all.

[00:11:48] Zero to two.

[00:11:49] And that was straight from your show.

[00:11:50] You know, that's surprising.

[00:11:52] You know, I try to come off humble but the truth is I'm pretty sure.

[00:11:56] Well, well, I'm over the thing and like, oh, there's not a there's not a Marvel hero named Hudson Taylor.

[00:12:02] Troy, you dummy.

[00:12:04] There's no David Livingston in the Marvel comic book.

[00:12:07] No, Peter Parker was who I was saying it.

[00:12:09] Okay.

[00:12:10] All right.

[00:12:11] You're on a roll here.

[00:12:12] Why don't you open us up with your number four episode of the year?

[00:12:15] All right, all right, all right.

[00:12:17] Number four.

[00:12:18] Yeah.

[00:12:19] Think about it.

[00:12:20] You know, I really liked.

[00:12:22] Um, do you remember we did that revive conversation where we just talked about that article that

[00:12:29] that that leaflet is that was a spurt in there.

[00:12:32] The richer back sir.

[00:12:33] It was richer back sir about how to spend our free time.

[00:12:37] And I found that shockingly fun and refreshing and interesting to talk about.

[00:12:44] Yeah, you know, we got, I got, we got good feedback from people who messaged me and was like,

[00:12:48] that was a fun one.

[00:12:49] Like I liked it's weird that this 400 year old pamphlet that was like quit spending your free time on useless stuff

[00:12:55] still made so many of us go scratch our heads and go, huh, that applies today and probably more so.

[00:13:00] I really liked that one too.

[00:13:02] Actually, I would say if I was having a separate category for revived conversations,

[00:13:07] I think that would have been my number one revived conversation for the year as well.

[00:13:10] And you know what?

[00:13:11] Don't even inspired me.

[00:13:12] I got to find another pamphlet for us to do.

[00:13:13] We should do another one.

[00:13:14] Do it.

[00:13:15] Yeah, I think those will be fun to cover more.

[00:13:17] Right.

[00:13:18] At least someone this to you give us your number four martyr in missionary.

[00:13:22] Although I'm starting to question who's really running your show after that last these last two, three, three questions.

[00:13:27] I'm just going to share.

[00:13:28] Okay, so it's kind of a toss up and I think I think I'm going to have to go with the interview that I did with Jonathan Carzwell about Pauline Hamilton who was a missionary to post-war China and then also to Taiwan.

[00:13:49] She was she was a really cool woman and she did a ton of different ministries.

[00:13:55] And her autobiography is just filled, I guess, her biography is not autobiography.

[00:14:00] But it's just filled with stories about about her her life like and all these people that she impacted and all of these things actually does her autobiography.

[00:14:11] Yeah, it's just it's really cool.

[00:14:14] All right, number four for me.

[00:14:18] I'm going to tell you my top. We've had so many good episodes this year.

[00:14:20] I was like, I kind of forget as you go through the year, just focus on the week to week and then when you get to the end of your year, like, oh yeah, we did that this year, we did that this year, we did that this year.

[00:14:28] But I think one of the ones that I enjoyed a lot was during the revived conversation with Ben from haunted cosmos.

[00:14:34] He came on and we talked about like these weird supernatural things that happened in church history just asking and talking about questions.

[00:14:41] So like what do you do with people in church history say they heard a voice and it told them to do something or Joan of Arc who said she got a vision from God.

[00:14:48] This is kind of weird things was really fun conversation and a lot of listeners really enjoyed it too.

[00:14:52] So that I think that go for a solid number four, I would feel weird if I didn't mention that episode and it was just fun to have a guy from that show on to he did he was great guys really nice occasionally I'll send him something like hey, do you see this?

[00:15:04] Of course, but he's a good guy so that was fun.

[00:15:07] All right church history trivia number three now at least I really got to get this at least as a zero Joel has two and technically Joel is going to be you know a little more favorite on this one because it's a little bit more in our court.

[00:15:19] However, I do think that I do think I would not be surprised if at least gets this one.

[00:15:24] So here it is who gave the eulogy for George Whitfield.

[00:15:30] Oh, I know this Wesley.

[00:15:32] I at least got it.

[00:15:34] Yes, BBB but it was it was John Wesley so I may actually challenge you made you make sure it was which one it was not Charles but it was John Wesley.

[00:15:42] All right, at least on the board one to two.

[00:15:46] See the face she made was so like I think I know this away what if I get it wrong that would be really embarrassing no all right good.

[00:15:53] I think you gave me another three seconds.

[00:15:55] I want to go now it's fine.

[00:15:56] Joel, thanks for giving at least one.

[00:15:57] I know you had it of course.

[00:15:58] Yeah, we're an expert of these but it was nice to be the third or least one.

[00:16:01] All right, at least no actually I won't start with you because I feel like I like this kind of revive thoughts, Marta and missionary revive thoughts.

[00:16:08] I think I'll go first then to give Joel a chance to think about number three.

[00:16:13] My number three episode of the year.

[00:16:15] Oh man, I shouldn't have gone first any more time to think about it.

[00:16:19] This one it was definitely one of my favorites.

[00:16:21] I definitely could have even seen it siding into number one.

[00:16:24] It is next three honestly it's really hard to do a number one or number two here but Peter Kierkegaard sermon against the Mormons which just came out a couple weeks ago.

[00:16:33] We've had lots of people like reach out being like man that was a really good one and I even had somebody reach out and go are you sure BYU posted that because why would they post it?

[00:16:42] It's such a damaging critique of the Mormon church and it is.

[00:16:46] And I just think that was just a cool one.

[00:16:48] It's I love sermons that are off the cuff or the guy didn't have like two or weeks or a month to plan it but he just had to give it in the moment and that one.

[00:16:55] I just think that was really good one so yeah, that's definitely one I'm really glad we got out this year.

[00:17:00] Yeah, it's definitely on my radar too as one I'm glad you mentioned it.

[00:17:04] All right, at least number three.

[00:17:06] All right, my number three is serving in silence the Armenian genocide.

[00:17:14] And I like this one because it's different from a lot of other episodes that I've done and you don't really think about missionaries serving through genocide.

[00:17:25] I mean, we have a lot of like post war China. We have a lot of like you know people who go to Japan and stuff like that World War two we have that but there was a ton of missionaries.

[00:17:37] There were a ton of missionaries in in Armenia and in like Turkey in those places like that and they were pretty much helpless during the during the genocide but they also are the one some of the most accurate and plentiful.

[00:17:52] First hand accounts that we have of the genocide so I thought it was it was a really difficult episode to do because it was very sad but I think it's it was incredibly important.

[00:18:03] So that's my number three.

[00:18:05] All right, cool.

[00:18:07] Number three.

[00:18:08] I'm going to throw in again more of a recent one but I enjoyed you talking about Woodrow Wilson on your two harder because I wasn't I wasn't involved with that at all.

[00:18:19] So I just got to sit back and be a bystander day.

[00:18:24] And me or civilian listening to revive that's in the talk about Woodrow Wilson Wilson standing still.

[00:18:31] I appreciate that Joe that was a long our deal that took it was one of those many ideas that we have here where I just was like this won't take too long and before you know it.

[00:18:41] I'm a thousand tabs into a deep dive on Woodrow Wilson asking questions like what was the French's response to this and that like just just way in way too deep.

[00:18:51] And I got to the end of that and after recording it in this very hot room late at night I was like did that come across good I don't know.

[00:18:58] But people have been saying it was good that they liked it a lot that it was really interesting and a lot of people were telling me that they did not know any of that stuff about Woodrow Wilson

[00:19:06] what what a sleaze bag he was and also how much he claimed to be a Christian.

[00:19:11] And so I was really glad that we were able to kind of get that out there the people.

[00:19:14] Yeah, I'm glad you mentioned that one.

[00:19:16] I didn't want to I didn't want to say it myself and be like remember that time I talked for two hours about Woodrow that was such a great time good me.

[00:19:22] So I got someone else said that because I would have been your little bit.

[00:19:58] We've been telling you about a great podcast called Compelt.

[00:20:01] It uses gripping immersive storytelling to bring Christian testimonies to life.

[00:20:05] One story that's especially powerful is Hannah overtones.

[00:20:09] Hannah was a mother of four with another baby on the way when one day out of the blue Hannah was falsely accused of murder.

[00:20:15] Hannah was shocked by the accusation and as a firm believer she knew that God would come to her rescue and would never let such a baseless lie be spread about her.

[00:20:23] But the exact opposite happened. Hannah eventually stood before a jury of her peers and heard them sentence her to life in prison.

[00:20:30] Hannah was innocent and she had done nothing wrong. This was a terrible mistake how could God have let her down.

[00:20:36] But Hannah would soon discover that God had a plan of his own.

[00:20:39] Listen to Hannah Overton share her incredible story on episode number 16 of Compelt titled falsely accused and sentenced to life in prison.

[00:20:47] Search for Compelt on your favorite podcast app or visit compeltpodcast.com that's compelled with an edpodcast.com.

[00:21:00] Church history trivia round chance to tie to yeah this is your chance to tie.

[00:21:08] I was going to say a revive thought style question but if you like to be fair kind of trying to pull from both shows here.

[00:21:15] So I got to be a little more balanced here and pull one for at least but you know what this guy it could be anybody okay so that you either one could get this he does fall a little bit more in a

[00:21:26] category but that's okay. This guy is considered a proto reformer who was burned at the stake in the early 15th century.

[00:21:35] Jonas yep at least that one that was that was too easy. It was too easy to see sorry about that Joel did you did the audio not come through maybe

[00:21:42] a little bit you know kind of broke up their first again I almost wasn't saying.

[00:21:48] I have three names until you said 15th century and then it cleared the my slate of memory.

[00:21:56] Yeah you know I should have said 1400s because I don't know about you but when I see 15th or 16th century my brain goes 1500s 1600s and that's okay.

[00:22:03] I don't tell my brain no finally at the age of 31 I feel like trained my brain enough to finally keep up with when people say century rather than hundreds.

[00:22:13] Right it only takes you half a lifetime to get there that pretty much I don't know other people have that problem but I have to I teach history and I had their moments

[00:22:21] right like 19th century that's that's right class we're in the 19th century.

[00:22:25] All right now we're people people talk to me and they're like it makes perfect sensual and I'm like we don't say that we're.

[00:22:34] Like yeah 31 we don't live we're not 31 we're.

[00:22:42] Yeah live in the 30 or 30 or 30 31st year that'd be like say how old are you I'm in my 31st year like that's that's just not a conversation

[00:22:52] not right because we'll say all the first century or first of the first 100 years but a century hasn't technically passed yet so it shouldn't

[00:22:59] like should that even be called the first century because the first century starts after the first 100.

[00:23:03] I mean technically we're in the 21st century and it's not 2100 something.

[00:23:06] Yeah and I know everyone is more in it so in my college I'm sure to say high casters are such idiots they can't do basic math

[00:23:12] I understand the argument at just your brain tells you 19th century that's typically we typically conversation we refer to the amount of time that has been completed first

[00:23:22] yes the amount of times that we're occupying within.

[00:23:25] Yes and the only time I feel like we do that is with the centuries and then you have to yeah yep

[00:23:30] we're on the same page we're gonna we're big we're big everybody's already bounced out.

[00:23:34] Yeah I can't we're a big history group we can we can get this changed in history.com all right told throwing it to you

[00:23:41] even though you didn't get the point there give us your number two episode of the year where where would you go for number two

[00:23:49] sorry just click this is me yeah you're up your your second your second you're not your third but your second you know

[00:23:57] yeah yeah yeah yeah oh my goodness this is a second to last second to last

[00:24:05] I know what I want to put in number one.

[00:24:09] I'm trying to think if it competes with number two and if so what I am gonna

[00:24:19] no I'm gonna do I'm gonna do increase Mayther do yourself no harm that one I thought was fascinating as well

[00:24:26] put that in my number two slot increase Mayther for starters like how many times you you don't get a lot of Mayther love out there in general right like yeah

[00:24:33] he gets a lot of he gets to none of the best what he does so I agree with you that was a really I'm glad we got that episode out

[00:24:40] I it was actually hard to get that episode recorded because I sent it to multiples of people and people were just kind of

[00:24:47] like I feel uncomfortable recording this episode on why you shouldn't commit suicide they were they were they basically

[00:24:53] sent me back like I feel like he's too hard on this and I don't agree with him and it was it actually took me quite a while

[00:24:59] to find somebody who agreed to do it and yet I think it was a really good episode and I'm really glad that

[00:25:05] um that he did I think I think it's definitely an uncomfortable and awkward episode but I think those part of the

[00:25:11] reasons that I mean from a like historical point of view I found it fascinating was like yeah again when we just

[00:25:20] look at what is a part of church history and and what people went through it's it's a unique

[00:25:27] adjustment of that uh that again yeah it is is not not necessarily fun but I did find it fascinating

[00:25:37] thank you all right at least the Martyrs missionaries episode number two

[00:25:41] okay this my pen ultimate episode is count Zinsendorf and the Moravians which is the most recent

[00:25:51] episode on on Martyrs missionaries and I loved doing this episode because it it was just the weirdest

[00:26:01] it was so weird um because you I started out thinking like all just cover you know count Zinsendorf

[00:26:05] people quote him that's great um and then you just it was it just evolved into like cults,

[00:26:11] heresy side holes wound with knees and it that one of the grosses

[00:26:21] but I got so much feedback from it and I loved it because people were just like what on earth is a

[00:26:25] side hole and why did they say it so often yeah um but it's great because it's just so

[00:26:31] so weird if you're revived not suddenly listening you don't know what Elise is talking about I

[00:26:36] both encourage you and caution you to go listen to Elise is one of her most recent episodes on the

[00:26:43] on the Moravian church movement and I think what I love about that episode was Elise went in with

[00:26:48] such innocent and we all did this idea of like oh I'm gonna study the Moravians I've heard about them

[00:26:53] for a long time they keep showing up as like oh there's a group of Moravians here and there

[00:26:57] I wonder what they're what they're really about who is this count Zinsendorf guy and I see

[00:27:00] I mean even last week I saw a pretty big Twitter account quote quoting sounds Zinsendorf he's like

[00:27:05] he's a famous guy that people like to quote we had you know you just you had no idea what you were

[00:27:11] getting into by the end of that I feel like everyone who's listening that was like by the end of

[00:27:14] that episode my head was spinning like what happened and how did it go so horribly wrong so that

[00:27:19] was really good I enjoyed that a lot. All right for me number two um I'm gonna give it high I do

[00:27:24] this I think I do this every year with number two and that's just it's just I shouldn't do it but

[00:27:28] I do it anyway because I can't I can't I can't cut my babies in half here I love them both

[00:27:33] and I got to put two episodes up here so I'm gonna do it. All right number two

[00:27:37] first one is this really great sermon by Ambrose he gave it while he was under siege

[00:27:42] he was kind of under attack and he gives this sermon while these Roman guards are trying to break in

[00:27:48] basically into it into where he and the guys are and he just talks about how it doesn't matter

[00:27:53] what happens to him what matters most is that they fought for God it's a great episode we put it

[00:27:58] out was the first episode of the year and I definitely think it's it would be it would be wrong

[00:28:03] not to mention it on this list because I really really loved this episode yeah the other episode

[00:28:07] I'm gonna say this is kind of a weird one um behind the our behind the scenes episode that at least

[00:28:13] and I did back in May uh we heard a lot of people say we heard other you know we'll have a lot of

[00:28:18] people say basically like we're really grateful you put that episode together you did a really good

[00:28:22] job explaining like life overseas for people and we also it directly helped us we didn't know

[00:28:28] it but I mean it directly helped us connect with a church when we were back in the states which

[00:28:31] was awesome and we got to go speak there up in Maine and they were just the nicest people that was

[00:28:35] just someone that and there was just other things like that where we got to connect with people

[00:28:39] and network and just get to know people and we would have never had that any of those things kind

[00:28:43] of come together had that episode not gone out so we were really grateful for just the positive

[00:28:48] feedback because we were really nervous we were kind of telling you know our story and thoughts

[00:28:52] in a way that we weren't sure how other people would feel and it was just great so that was really

[00:28:57] as a personal episode that one meant a lot to us and meant a lot to me that we were I mean

[00:29:03] I remember really so it was very nervous like oh should we even do this and I was like no I

[00:29:06] really think we should and yeah it just it worked out really well so we're grateful for everyone

[00:29:10] who did reach out to us and um yeah thank you thank you for that it was it was personally

[00:29:15] very enriching all right church history trivia number five this might be the last one just so

[00:29:23] we don't have a tie break here that now I've said that it's the last one I just had a question

[00:29:27] on my head and it just totally blank like where did it go uh shoot where did it go my brain had a good

[00:29:32] a good question for you guys that I will come back um no this is really embarrassing where did it go

[00:29:39] I totally totally blanked out of things all right church history trivia number number number number five

[00:29:46] last question here we're gonna get rid of that I win no no no actually one of my questions

[00:29:52] what's gonna be which guy served in the YMCA as a you did it Joel you will

[00:29:57] I'm ready you pre-pre-answered it that's amazing okay church history trivia number one which

[00:30:07] ah easy which two people no although which one person was the first person to cross central

[00:30:16] Africa alive and discovered Victoria Falls there was no beeps there oh

[00:30:34] okay I kind of agree that that does feel like it was a tie because I do feel like Joel was trying

[00:30:39] to impose new and you both knew it that was too easy the listeners probably going this is

[00:30:44] church I had a better question I literally had it saved in my brain I was like this is a good one

[00:30:48] and I cannot I do I found it okay you guys ready for the tiebreaker this one you will not get I

[00:30:53] remember what it was now okay all right uh the listener is now going so you didn't write these

[00:30:59] questions out beforehand no we did not all right Bernard of Clarevo is responsible for causing which

[00:31:07] crusade oh my heavens uh uh Bernard of Clarevo is responsible for

[00:31:15] that this is Joel typing it into the second crusade right how did okay Joel well I want to see

[00:31:22] your screen what how did how could that have happened it does Bernard of Clarevo because

[00:31:25] with a second one that you're asking serious yeah this one sounds like I genuinely remember

[00:31:32] does something from church history so I'm pretty proud of like that I got it Joel

[00:31:37] all right I mean I wasn't gonna guess that he is correct it was the second crusade it was by the

[00:31:42] way because they tried to do one before and it it wasn't very good in the bird the first one was

[00:31:47] successful that we did a whole episode on that okay die for the listeners if they want to go find

[00:31:52] it uh by going to our patreon but he was the one that rallied all the folk for the second one

[00:31:57] right yeah he rallied them for the second one the second one wasn't utter incomplete disaster

[00:32:01] which was really bad because he basically sold it as like God wouldn't let us lose and then they

[00:32:05] lost really really badly so that was and now not the best thing probably why you shouldn't do that

[00:32:09] all right so we had a type tie three to three but it looks like Joel is now the church history uh

[00:32:15] history yeah history trivial winner four to three bye bye bye bye

[00:32:19] 2023 crown yeah the 2023 crown Joel wow you went in so unconfident but you came out on top

[00:32:25] way to go my man well done and with that Joel tell us what you're yeah tell us for your number one

[00:32:31] episode of the year is oh it's gotta be it's gotta be London fire what a fun terrifying uh

[00:32:37] conversation about the one of the most horrifying ways to die the London fire of 1666

[00:32:44] what a cell the listeners gonna just go download that right away now there you are you're here

[00:32:56] and then you gotta know uh i'm glad you picked that one it was the one that I actually am not it's

[00:33:01] not my number one and I didn't I felt weird cuz i was like how do I like again it's another

[00:33:05] one of those I did a lot of the work so I felt weird to my own horn here but also it was like

[00:33:09] it's really good episode but it doesn't it wasn't gonna be my number one because I did want to shout

[00:33:13] out a sermon that we had but I love I love doing that episode it is one of the weirdest chapters

[00:33:19] of church history I think that I have ever explored and recorded with you Joel that it was just like

[00:33:25] from start to finish you would not if you wrote that script down and hand it to Hollywood and you

[00:33:30] went and saw that movie you would get to the end of that movie and go that is the most ridiculous

[00:33:34] movie I've ever seen there's no way all those things would happen realistic and then but it is

[00:33:39] exactly true it happened and even probably it's probably there's probably even more stuff to

[00:33:43] it that we didn't know about it's just an absolutely insane episode all right at least your number one

[00:33:47] episode of the year my number one is a three in one because I did three episodes on this person

[00:33:55] and if you are a faithful martyrs missionary listener uh and I didn't choose this person you would be

[00:34:01] very upset um so it is it is Hudson Taylor um of course and that is that is my that's my top one

[00:34:07] and I don't think I have to explain it because it's Hudson Taylor but uh but is but is but is life is

[00:34:13] is so cool and I I thought I knew everything there was to know about Hudson Taylor before I

[00:34:18] went in this episode or three episodes and I found out that I knew next and nothing and I was

[00:34:24] honestly incredibly blessed by doing the three part series on him so that's mine that's my number one

[00:34:28] yeah somebody who has read Hudson Taylor's autobiography like I thought or his biography by a son I can't

[00:34:34] remember what it is but it's like anyway I didn't think I would be learning a lot of new stuff when

[00:34:38] I listened to that episode you had so many stories and like really great stories that I had never

[00:34:43] heard before and you also told flaws of his but not in a way like sometimes they'll rewrite history

[00:34:49] and they'll just like this guy was actually terrible they try to do that with David Livingston a lot

[00:34:52] we're like oh he was actually an evil but no he was a great guy uh but with Hudson Taylor uh you

[00:34:58] didn't do that you did a good job I think talking about like real flaws of his and also uh giving

[00:35:03] a ton of stories if you like Hudson Taylor if you like you know missionary stories and you

[00:35:07] haven't listened to anything oh I already know Hudson Taylor's not trusting me I would almost

[00:35:11] guarantee you there are lots of stories in there that you had not heard before because again

[00:35:15] they're not in the autobiography you have to go to other sources to find them my number one

[00:35:19] episode for the year William Bacon Stevens uh the anatomy praises god episode it was so good I

[00:35:27] really enjoyed that one just it was unexpected because it was this guy had never heard of well he

[00:35:31] was William Bacon Stevens he didn't ever do anything else that like wouldn't make the church history

[00:35:35] books or anything but he had this really awesome sermon that I just kind of stumbled into by accident

[00:35:41] where he just talks about how the human body glorifies god to a room of basically doctors who are

[00:35:46] graduating going to the doctor degree and he's like you guys have learned to treat the physical body

[00:35:50] but you don't know about treating the spiritual but the spiritual causes which cause so many of the

[00:35:55] issues that you're gonna have don't forget god and he just uses the human body with the science they

[00:35:59] had to explain um how it's just amazingly created and how god is glorified in it and what's really

[00:36:05] cool is that I feel like all of the things he said is even more true today like the things that he

[00:36:11] was impressed by back then there's even more evidence of how incredible the human body is now and so

[00:36:16] it's just a really neat sermon that from 170 years ago is echoing the same truths of god that I

[00:36:21] think are still real to this day so I really enjoyed that sermon um and it was an unexpected treat

[00:36:26] like I did not I didn't get any into that sermon I did not see it being as awesome as it was and

[00:36:30] I think it's part of the reason I enjoyed it too neat all right another another year in the bag

[00:36:37] of reviving Martyrs and missionaries that's right we have we've covered another year and

[00:36:43] we have our top five we have our church history trivia crown winner Joel before this and an upset for

[00:36:49] the ages um I don't think there's really anything else left to do other than to say on on the

[00:36:54] revive thought side I would just like to say and thank you to you who are listening we could not do

[00:37:00] are we certainly could not do our show without you because you read the sermons for us every week

[00:37:04] that we put up on our show we are extremely grateful to all of you who have messaged us commented

[00:37:09] on something sent us a personal email who have read a sermon for us that all the different ways

[00:37:15] that you have many of you have reached out to us over this last year uh we're in all the people

[00:37:20] who have signed up for patreon as well or who bought some of our merch when we did the little

[00:37:24] merch thing we learned a lot from that apparently you guys will buy merchandise from us which is

[00:37:28] pretty cool and uh yeah we're just really grateful for all the different ways that you have come

[00:37:33] along and supported us this year and we're looking forward to making on our end revive thoughts many more

[00:37:37] episodes for all of you to listen to in this next year at least what do you got for them?

[00:37:41] I would I would kind of echo your sentiments because I think that we have some of the most

[00:37:47] interactive audiences like that you could you could have for a podcast um I feel like we get

[00:37:52] several emails and they're so sweet or they're informative or their suggestions of like hey

[00:37:57] from my show like hey would you like to cover this person or here's this you know obscure person

[00:38:02] I love no more about and like can you figure this out and I'm like oh that sounds really interesting

[00:38:06] let me add it to my list and so if I haven't gotten via person yet it's because they're on my list

[00:38:10] and at some point they will they will be covered but um but yeah I think that we don't we feel

[00:38:16] what you see if you if you're on a podcast speaking no microphone you can sometimes feel like

[00:38:20] you're just speaking into the air and you're like okay I hope this does well but our audiences are

[00:38:25] I give such great feedback so I think that it just it feels nice to feel like you're interacting

[00:38:30] with with you guys yeah pretty consistently all right Joel what do you got for the listeners we're

[00:38:35] heading out here uh I'm excited for 2024 it's crazy that we're still doing this I don't like

[00:38:44] how long when do we start reviving that I don't remember I do remember it was in 2019 and at the time

[00:38:51] I was living in Miami and we were putting this together in a laundry room we then moved to Kansas

[00:38:57] City did it for two years together at your house which was when we had real church history

[00:39:00] trivia nights where we have like live streamers and people come in that was that was fun

[00:39:04] during those Halcyon days of covid live streaming when that was really big and then we moved to

[00:39:10] Cambodia and at least and I recorded our episodes in a literal wardrobe that didn't lead to Narnia

[00:39:14] it does lead to like cockroach which was probably and now here we are in the Indonesian studio with

[00:39:19] these really nice sound boards and this really nice roadcaster and I don't want to say like it's

[00:39:23] been a journey but it does feel like it's been it's been a journey so next year next year in 2024

[00:39:29] we'll be crossing into our sixth year of doing survive on yes Joel we will have finished five years

[00:39:38] but as you point out that's a weird way to say it I feel like I feel like it raised me a concern

[00:39:43] that we don't know how to count that's what it's neat and I love doing it and I look forward

[00:39:52] to doing it for years come yeah I enjoyed it too and I will say listener you are listening right now

[00:39:58] I mean I revive thoughts still has 5.0 stars out of 180 apple reviews I don't I feel like

[00:40:06] we've got and we're probably not breaking a record but that's definitely like I've never seen

[00:40:10] as show where I mean for especially because we're not exactly an uncontroversial show we're covering

[00:40:15] deal of chance and we're covering like big topics like war we've had to talk about slavery we've

[00:40:20] had to talk about a lot of like not good stuff the fact that we have not gotten one star by anybody

[00:40:25] and the fact that you have all stayed with us for years and kept those ratings coming in and

[00:40:29] keep just have been so encouraging it's just one of those many things that you have done

[00:40:33] that I am really appreciative of and just another way that you've all shown us that you care

[00:40:38] and that you enjoy this content and yeah we're just really grateful all right oh I had one more

[00:40:43] thing I wanted to add here I want as a Christmas present um where we are four reviews away on

[00:40:50] Martyrs and missionaries from having 100 apple reviews so if if you would like to give a review

[00:40:57] you don't you don't derive anything I mean I enjoy reading them but you can just click that 5 star

[00:41:01] that's that's what you want to do and that would be it would be a huge Christmas has done to me if

[00:41:05] you would like to do that all right so you heard that there at least is announcing that for Christmas

[00:41:09] she's dear Santa and five star reviews on apple pie for our for review I thought we don't we don't

[00:41:14] want anything we don't need Christmas presents we dislike that you're listening but if you want

[00:41:18] to join us on patreon and continue supporting what we're doing what is the easier than that we would

[00:41:23] be more than happy to have you because it does help every patreon listener helps us a lot

[00:41:27] and continue to do all this so yeah if you're listening and those of you who are on patreon we are

[00:41:31] really grateful for you and your continuous support all right I feel like we've hit all of our

[00:41:36] major important things we thank you for listening to this rare crossover episode we have not done one
