04:30 --> 04:32 [SPEAKER_01]: So I go to bed in the, in the, in the evening, wake up in the morning.
04:33 --> 04:36 [SPEAKER_01]: And there will be like, just people arguing for many, many, many, many hours.
04:37 --> 04:52 [SPEAKER_01]: about the the Trinity and after all those arguments from the and Terrians I I do want to say I have come to conclusion which is I am more convinced now that the Unitarians are wrong in our misreading scripture than I ever had been I am I was pretty sure they were wrong
04:53 --> 04:59 [SPEAKER_01]: but after all of their best cases to make that they are better Christians and they're I'm even more convinced they are awesome.
04:59 --> 05:18 [SPEAKER_01]: So if you're a unitarian and you were hoping for a switch there you'll lost me even more your guys are terrible at arguing and but so it was been funds setting them off over the summer Christian are not spent a lot of fun and we've had really really great feedback and lots of people have sent their ideas of people from so season two is getting wrapped up I was getting like planned out it's really in a good place and

07:08 --> 07:14 [SPEAKER_02]: There has been no English translation of it, at least that we've been able to to find or identify or recognize in any way.
07:15 --> 07:28 [SPEAKER_02]: So this is cool to have again once again another Revive Thoughts debut of a sermon that previously was not accessible to English-speaking people as a refresher John Husborn in the year 1369
07:30 --> 07:33 [SPEAKER_02]: And now what is called the Czech Republic back then it was Bohemia.
07:33 --> 07:37 [SPEAKER_02]: So you'll hear me talking about Bohemia in the Kingdom Bohemia and all that stuff.
07:38 --> 07:41 [SPEAKER_02]: Again, today I imagine modern day Czech Republic.
07:41 --> 07:46 [SPEAKER_02]: As we talked about in the first episode, his life wasn't very easy at the start.
07:46 --> 07:47 [SPEAKER_02]: His parents were very poor.
07:48 --> 07:55 [SPEAKER_02]: One of the reasons he was drawn into ministry in the first place was a one that we've discussed on the show several times.
07:55 --> 07:56 [SPEAKER_02]: One that affected a lot of people.
07:57 --> 08:03 [SPEAKER_02]: that we have on the show and it's that priests were always well fed, you know, they had closed on their back.
08:03 --> 08:15 [SPEAKER_02]: It was one of the professions you could go into that was relatively stable and that would provide your necessities and needs in an era where that was not a guarantee.
08:15 --> 08:19 [SPEAKER_02]: But as he studied to become a priest, something changed along the way,
08:20 --> 08:29 [SPEAKER_02]: As he studied the scriptures, his heart was transformed in a genuine conversion to Christ with something that he would talk about.
08:30 --> 08:35 [SPEAKER_02]: That conversion sent him on a path that would eventually change history.
08:35 --> 08:37 [SPEAKER_02]: I don't think it's unfair to say it.
08:37 --> 08:39 [SPEAKER_02]: I mean, it did change history.
08:39 --> 08:41 [SPEAKER_02]: The path would end up with him being martyr.
08:41 --> 08:43 [SPEAKER_02]: He was burned at the stake for his beliefs.
08:44 --> 08:57 [SPEAKER_02]: And, you know, some time later, contribute towards this great reformation that came across Europe, many reformers that came after him, pointed back to us as the one who inspired their own work.
08:58 --> 09:00 [SPEAKER_01]: Now, in this sermon, you're about to listen to the wheat and the tears.
09:00 --> 09:07 [SPEAKER_01]: He gives a great explanation for why God allows these false teachers in the church, which is one of the major themes of his life.
09:07 --> 09:12 [SPEAKER_01]: And in fact, in this sermon, he says, I'm going to give like a faithful chronicle of what happened here.
09:12 --> 09:15 [SPEAKER_01]: And he mentions how people are being executed for
09:17 --> 09:18 [SPEAKER_01]: the teaching that's going on.
09:18 --> 09:25 [SPEAKER_01]: So it seems important to talk about what was that that caused that specific execution that he'll mention in the sermon.
09:25 --> 09:28 [SPEAKER_01]: Yana really started preaching in the year 1402.
09:28 --> 09:31 [SPEAKER_01]: He has a very unique place to preach for that time period.
09:31 --> 09:32 [SPEAKER_01]: It's a place to preach.
09:32 --> 09:33 [SPEAKER_01]: That was only 11 years old.
09:33 --> 09:34 [SPEAKER_01]: It had been built in 1391.
09:35 --> 09:37 [SPEAKER_01]: It was created to speak.
09:38 --> 09:58 [SPEAKER_01]: the check language of the people and at that time many of the sermons that were so all of the entire mass was in Latin and husk will advocate for switching to the common vernacular of the people wickliff over in England is kind of pushing the idea of let's move it to English and husk is going to start moving it to check but it won't happen until a couple of your after his death when the husk sites
09:59 --> 10:05 [SPEAKER_01]: realize they're no longer welcome in the Catholic Church Day will switch it over to having their, you know, communion and stuff in check.
10:06 --> 10:12 [SPEAKER_01]: But at the time, all of the sermons were being done pretty much in German because German was such an important influence.
10:12 --> 10:16 [SPEAKER_01]: And so the people weren't hearing their sermons in their own language.
10:16 --> 10:17 [SPEAKER_01]: This was one of the first, uh,
10:18 --> 10:22 [SPEAKER_01]: churches where they were giving the homilies in actually the language of Czech.
10:22 --> 10:24 [SPEAKER_01]: So it was a really important place to the people.
10:24 --> 10:33 [SPEAKER_01]: They had a capacity to sit of 3 people, which is crazy because I feel like a 3 person church today is still a pretty impressive church, let alone back then.
10:34 --> 10:38 [SPEAKER_01]: Host was, uh, it's most famous pre-chry looked at the history of this church.
10:38 --> 10:42 [SPEAKER_01]: It's called Bethlehem Chapel, but, like, in, you know, in, like, check instead of how we would say it.
10:43 --> 10:47 [SPEAKER_01]: And it was ordered to be torn down in 1412 because of Host's preaching.
10:47 --> 10:51 [SPEAKER_01]: And the town basically just said, nah, like, we're gonna ignore your order.
10:51 --> 10:53 [SPEAKER_01]: We don't want to, we like, this place too much.
10:54 --> 10:55 [SPEAKER_01]: And so they didn't tear it down.
10:55 --> 10:59 [SPEAKER_01]: It's still standing in actually in the year 1997.
10:59 --> 11:05 [SPEAKER_01]: So fast forward, 500 plus years way outside of the story that we're telling today.
11:06 --> 11:20 [SPEAKER_01]: And like a astronomer named an asteroid after, specifically after this church, he was a check astronomist and he named it the asteroid, you know, the check version of Bethlehem Chapel after this church.
11:20 --> 11:23 [SPEAKER_01]: So as far as I know, this is the first time
11:23 --> 11:26 [SPEAKER_01]: A asteroid was named after a speaker on the show.
11:26 --> 11:33 [SPEAKER_01]: Although a crater on the moon is named after Jonathan Swift, and we did cover him many moons ago as it were.
11:34 --> 11:40 [SPEAKER_02]: One of the major influences on hustering this period was the English translator Wickliff.
11:40 --> 11:46 [SPEAKER_02]: Wickliff again, he worked on translating the Bible into English and Catholic Church did not like him for.
11:47 --> 11:49 [SPEAKER_02]: He was he made enemies with the Catholic Church.
11:50 --> 11:58 [SPEAKER_02]: and has didn't copy whicliff outright, but it's clear that whicliff's work really encouraged and inspired him.
11:58 --> 12:00 [SPEAKER_02]: It was a big influence on his life.
12:00 --> 12:14 [SPEAKER_02]: Both us and his followers came to believe that scripture carried more weight than custom in that too long of the Catholic Church had let tradition dictate the life of the church and the people of Europe.
12:14 --> 12:15 [SPEAKER_02]: Hus and whicliff represented
12:21 --> 12:25 [SPEAKER_02]: structure and emphasis on tradition and the way that that power controlled the people.
12:25 --> 12:34 [SPEAKER_02]: Hus worked at a university and there he pushed for, checked people to hold more leading power than the Germans did.
12:35 --> 12:42 [SPEAKER_02]: And that shift would eventually help steer the university in a distinctly hussite direction for years after his death.
12:43 --> 12:51 [SPEAKER_01]: In the late 14th century and early 15th century, the popes of Italy had a complicated relationship with the Kingdom Naples, and then you may be thinking, where are we going this?
12:51 --> 12:52 [SPEAKER_01]: That's old on a moment.
12:52 --> 12:55 [SPEAKER_01]: At one point, the Kingdom Naples got a support from the pope.
12:55 --> 13:05 [SPEAKER_01]: He was kind of the protector of the Kingdom Naples got kind of put into power by the pope, so in reverse, the king decided to kind of be the protector of them for a bit.
13:05 --> 13:11 [SPEAKER_01]: But during the time of unrest, the Kingdom Naples started taking a bunch of people, states, and land from the pope in Italy.
13:12 --> 13:34 [SPEAKER_01]: Well in 1411 there are two popes and there will when when the council that will get rid of young husk i think will lead to the third pope and one is called today the anti-pope which is basically like we made the wrong pope we didn't know which pope was right at the time this pope was the wrong one and now he gets to name anti-pope and i gotta say i'm really glad i was a proud to say i don't have to deal with all of this stuff
13:35 --> 13:45 [SPEAKER_01]: But the Antipope decided to launch a crusade against the Kingdom Naples to get his land back, but you gotta launch a crusade against this King who used to be your protector and now you're all this stuff is going on.
13:46 --> 13:51 [SPEAKER_01]: Um, because also the King of Naples supported the other Pope, so the other Pope who won, he got anyway.
13:51 --> 13:57 [SPEAKER_01]: The Antipope needs money, and so he started selling indulgences across the land including Bohemia.
13:57 --> 14:01 [SPEAKER_01]: And Bohemia is all about it because the King gets in on this.
14:01 --> 14:03 [SPEAKER_01]: He gets to get someone that money too.
14:04 --> 14:05 [SPEAKER_01]: So forgiveness is for sale.
14:05 --> 14:08 [SPEAKER_01]: The very same thing Martin Luther will get in trouble with in the church.
14:09 --> 14:12 [SPEAKER_01]: That leads to the information a hundred years from now.
14:12 --> 14:15 [SPEAKER_01]: Indulgent selling is the same thing that Yonhus is going to get in trouble with too.
14:16 --> 14:26 [SPEAKER_01]: The king wants everyone to sell these indulgences and everyone's kind of supporting it, except for Yonhus who starts preaching very fiery sermons.
14:26 --> 14:27 [SPEAKER_01]: This is completely awful.
14:27 --> 14:30 [SPEAKER_01]: Forget you, forgiveness is free from Christ.
14:30 --> 14:31 [SPEAKER_01]: It's never from sale.
14:33 --> 14:51 [SPEAKER_01]: sell people into heaven is simony at the very least if not just a bunch of other things he is railing against it and the people a prog are on his side they're saying yeah you know what they're doing is wrong the church is out of line here and it gets pretty crazy three men basically go public
14:52 --> 14:57 [SPEAKER_01]: They're not, you know, doing it with you on us, but the three supporters of him, they go to the public square.
14:57 --> 14:58 [SPEAKER_01]: They denounce the indulgence.
14:58 --> 15:02 [SPEAKER_01]: They burn the people, bulls, statements that we're saying.
15:02 --> 15:04 [SPEAKER_01]: You can buy indulgences as a gift for goodness.
15:05 --> 15:07 [SPEAKER_01]: They say, look, we follow us.
15:07 --> 15:11 [SPEAKER_01]: And we will not follow the pope in the church because it's wrong right now.
15:20 --> 15:27 [SPEAKER_02]: So the king of Bohemia, who was taking a cut of the indulgences, he was furious about this whole situation.
15:27 --> 15:33 [SPEAKER_02]: He had a three-minute arrested and then beheaded for defying both the church and the state.
15:33 --> 15:35 [SPEAKER_02]: And he also banned the teachings of Wickliffe.
15:35 --> 15:37 [SPEAKER_02]: blaming them for stirring up the unrest.
15:38 --> 15:44 [SPEAKER_02]: And the university that I can host taught at was a part at, they kind of just ignored all of this.
15:44 --> 15:51 [SPEAKER_02]: And they kept teaching what they had always been teaching there and kind of defiance of this King of Bohemians decree.
15:51 --> 16:05 [SPEAKER_02]: The King then made a political move, convening a council of church leaders without inviting us, and their goal was to find a way to soften, with cliffs, teachings, enough to satisfy the church without fully rejecting them.
16:05 --> 16:10 [SPEAKER_02]: So it sounds like to me he was trying to play somewhat of a event.
16:11 --> 16:38 [SPEAKER_01]: intermediary broker does like like they want to keep the church happy because he's getting paid by them the Catholic church but he also doesn't want to have to arrest and behead all of his own people and bokeh I think you're being generous to me maybe that's a bit of what he's doing I feel like he's he's playing politics basically I got the impression it was more in this we're looking at the same notes here but I get the impression it was more like how can I get you on my side what do I need to give you
16:38 --> 16:53 [SPEAKER_01]: to make you happy enough to not, you know, like it's kind of grease in the wheel, you know, your classic like slimy politics that everyone does it like, it's kind of like, how do I, and he got all these people without us there, maybe maybe you want to be the next leader of Prague, you know, well, Huss isn't here.

40:12 --> 40:25 [SPEAKER_00]: In the same way, when evil people are scattered sparsely among the good day or in a certain way useful to the good, they help them toward a great reward and serve as exercise and spiritual warfare.

40:32 --> 40:38 [SPEAKER_00]: And so they would not have a great reward, but because evil people are given to the good it's a test.

42:18 --> 42:21 [SPEAKER_01]: He says they'll tell you come out here and you'll see me, but I'm not there.
42:22 --> 42:31 [SPEAKER_01]: whether it's Peter, warning, it's the entire second chapter of second Peter, it's all about false teachers, Paul warns about it, Jude warns about it, Revelation.
42:31 --> 42:40 [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, this, this common theme of why false teachers are evil and they have this, this parable the week and the tears and yet the sermon really changed the way I looked at it.
42:41 --> 42:55 [SPEAKER_01]: especially this part of the end where us is chronically the people that he knows that were executed for standing up against false teaching and how horrible it was and by the way this sermon was probably preached in that time period when he was in the barns and the fields.
42:57 --> 43:11 [SPEAKER_01]: So this was freshly in his memory only a year or so back, but he then he says, you know what, if there were no evil people to stand against good people, then the good people would have no great temptation and there would be no great battle and so there would be no great reward.
43:12 --> 43:18 [SPEAKER_01]: you, the good people are given this test to see if they're going to be faithful to God against the false teachers.
43:18 --> 43:22 [SPEAKER_01]: And if we try to get rid of the false teachers, we'd end up getting rid of good people.
43:22 --> 43:29 [SPEAKER_01]: But when you give the wheat and the tuitweeds time to grow, it becomes obvious who the wheat and the weeds are.
43:29 --> 43:36 [SPEAKER_01]: And if somebody who looks at this world who gets frustrated by the false teaching, you see all across social media amplifies it.
43:36 --> 43:37 [SPEAKER_01]: You see it in life, you've met it, maybe
43:41 --> 43:46 [SPEAKER_01]: Um, that temptation that the Catholic Church had to get rid of all the false teaching that was leading to them getting rid of Yonhaz.
43:47 --> 43:53 [SPEAKER_01]: Um, it shows that you're hurting more good people when you try to just use force to get rid of it.
43:53 --> 44:00 [SPEAKER_01]: Whereas at the same time, as time goes on, it becomes very clear who the real Christians are and who the fake ones are.
44:00 --> 44:03 [SPEAKER_01]: Somebody you can sometimes be impatient once the sea change happened right away.
44:04 --> 44:07 [SPEAKER_01]: It's encouraging that actually letting it play out is the right move.
44:08 --> 44:12 [SPEAKER_01]: And not only that, but like Husset, there would be no great battle, and there would be no great reward.
44:12 --> 44:19 [SPEAKER_01]: If we weren't up against false teachers, how could we show the clearness of got Christ and how much better it is in the false teaching?
44:19 --> 44:23 [SPEAKER_01]: and what great reward would there be if everybody was obviously wrong?
44:23 --> 44:27 [SPEAKER_01]: It's just such a beautiful thing and coming from a guy who had to live it out.
44:27 --> 44:38 [SPEAKER_01]: And this isn't coming from a guy who wrote it in a, you know, and it would still be beautifully true statements if it was written in a safe library, you know, a hundred years ago in a Christian country, but it's being written by a guy, spoken by a guy.
44:38 --> 44:53 [SPEAKER_01]: to a congregation hiding out in a barn hiding out in a forest they are feeling the effects of false teaching far more than probably most of us ever will and yet he's saying this is good actually god has a good plan for it we need to appreciate what he's doing right now that to me
