09:13 --> 09:21 [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I just I just Google to make sure I'm not crazy There is like a like a kind of Christian college or something called log college seminary or something like that.

09:44 --> 09:52 [SPEAKER_01]: So you know what I don't know, Joel maybe I have run into them before and didn't realize I was using them or maybe I just kind of thought Log college was just the name of the website.

10:03 --> 10:11 [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, yeah, and so To explain what a log college is basically it's a pioneer school to train up and raise pastors

10:13 --> 10:15 [SPEAKER_02]: And I think it's specifically America.
10:15 --> 10:16 [SPEAKER_02]: Is that like...
10:17 --> 10:20 [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it's really, it's really crazy to me.
10:20 --> 10:22 [SPEAKER_01]: Like, it's something we don't think of.
10:22 --> 10:28 [SPEAKER_01]: But America used to be like this untouched mission field, which is a weird feeling to think about.
10:28 --> 10:30 [SPEAKER_01]: But there was a, we look at the withfields.
10:30 --> 10:31 [SPEAKER_01]: They were going to America.
10:31 --> 10:36 [SPEAKER_01]: Like, it really wasn't, it was not seen as a Christian nice nation.
10:36 --> 10:39 [SPEAKER_01]: Like, we always know how America was found as a Christian nation.
10:39 --> 10:41 [SPEAKER_01]: But that part comes after this part.
10:41 --> 10:42 [SPEAKER_01]: And that's what's really strange.
10:43 --> 10:49 [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, yeah, people in Europe were viewing America as a place to do missions work.
10:49 --> 11:00 [SPEAKER_02]: We were the mission field, I say, we meaning America, and like, yeah, for I mentioned the Wesley Brothers, Whitfield came to America to do missions here.
11:01 --> 11:09 [SPEAKER_02]: And you can see the success as America would soon be then sending out its own missionaries.
11:09 --> 11:17 [SPEAKER_02]: And so it's kind of a great case study where you can see a while look at the how the world reacted to the need for the gospel here.
11:17 --> 11:26 [SPEAKER_02]: They sent out missionaries and America became this powerhouse of missions in and of itself where it is now sending out its missionaries.
11:26 --> 11:27 [SPEAKER_02]: You can see it that way.
11:28 --> 11:28 [SPEAKER_02]: It's also
11:29 --> 11:36 [SPEAKER_02]: kind of sad if you play the timeline a little bit further because we can kind of see where we've kind of fallen from that in a lot of ways as a country.
11:36 --> 11:44 [SPEAKER_02]: So Gilbert originally went to school to be a doctor but he switched to theology a few years later which is a common thing on this show.
11:44 --> 11:51 [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah I would say that if you are growing up and it looks like you're going to be a lawyer or a doctor or a kid saying that like yeah I'm going to be a lawyer doctor.
11:53 --> 11:54 [SPEAKER_01]: By revived thoughts standards you've
11:58 --> 11:59 [SPEAKER_02]: That's true.
11:59 --> 12:05 [SPEAKER_02]: If you make it on this show, you're definitely more likely to have become a minister as I'm flying.
12:05 --> 12:06 [SPEAKER_02]: I mean, obviously.
12:06 --> 12:12 [SPEAKER_02]: Gilbert was ordained to preach in 1726, but he had a pretty bumpy start.
12:12 --> 12:15 [SPEAKER_02]: His first password only lasted a few weeks.
12:15 --> 12:21 [SPEAKER_02]: There in New Jersey where he was, and I wasn't quite sure why it lasted a few weeks.
12:21 --> 12:24 [SPEAKER_02]: I kind of get the impression that he just wasn't a very good
12:25 --> 12:39 [SPEAKER_02]: Speaker yet like he he like his congregation was kind of like let's get somebody else in here like he didn't quite make the That first introductory time Maybe maybe it was that maybe that maybe that first impression really went poorly.
12:39 --> 12:39 [SPEAKER_01]: He made it.
12:39 --> 12:43 [SPEAKER_01]: He made it made it full of himself shook didn't shake hands the right way I don't know it.
12:43 --> 12:51 [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I've never I don't actually can't think of too many other times where the first pastor had only last a couple weeks on this show That is a uniquely awkward moment for him
12:51 --> 12:57 [SPEAKER_02]: But we see later in his life here, he works hard and gets much better at preaching.
12:57 --> 13:01 [SPEAKER_02]: And so that's what makes me think that there was room from improvement there.
13:02 --> 13:02 [SPEAKER_02]: I don't have the details.
13:02 --> 13:05 [SPEAKER_02]: I don't know exactly why that first pass or only lasted a few weeks.
13:06 --> 13:14 [SPEAKER_02]: But after that, he went on a traveling, evangelist, kind of road trip with a few other preachers.
13:15 --> 13:19 [SPEAKER_02]: And was able to practice his preaching that way, but on that row, T-Gat.
13:19 --> 13:37 [SPEAKER_02]: very sick, a deathly sick, almost died and so went back home to recover, went back home to his father and again his father was operating this log college there and so he kind of got to shadow and hang around this log college which seems to be again a good
13:38 --> 13:55 [SPEAKER_02]: place for him to be because he was able to from from his account skip master is preaching right become he that's where he developed his preaching style and where he uh it kind of came into his own personality uh and his trajectories a little bit different from there on out.
13:56 --> 14:13 [SPEAKER_01]: Alright, in 1738, George with Field was in America leading the New Jersey revival, alongside Jonathan Edwards, go go listen episode, we've done them on both of them, and with Field heard Tenant preach, and with Field's the biggest name if you don't know, in the Great Awakening, he's one of the most important people.
14:13 --> 14:23 [SPEAKER_01]: And so this is a big name hearing a young tenant preach and he said of his sermons in a private journal at the time that he had quote Never heard such a searching sermon before quote in quote.
14:23 --> 14:24 [SPEAKER_01]: That's a pretty big one.
14:24 --> 14:28 [SPEAKER_01]: That's a pretty good one to have for you know I would love to have people say that about me when I preach it there.
14:28 --> 14:29 [SPEAKER_01]: Oh, that really got to me
14:30 --> 14:41 [SPEAKER_01]: In 1740, and 1741, he would join with Field on a few sermon tours, and with Field's nickname for him, and his journal was, again, another, back in his journal, he wrote a film and quote, called him a son of thunder.
14:41 --> 14:43 [SPEAKER_01]: Again, very high praise.
14:43 --> 14:46 [SPEAKER_01]: So whatever, whatever he was struggling with, he seems to have shaken it off by now.
14:47 --> 14:55 [SPEAKER_01]: Now, the things have begun to become a problem as the school, the law college that was there, and I did my best to do this.
14:55 --> 14:58 [SPEAKER_01]: If there's somebody's an expert on this law college, I know exactly.
14:58 --> 14:59 [SPEAKER_01]: You mess up, I do apologize.

15:45 --> 15:50 [SPEAKER_01]: Jonathan Edwards had a little bit of trouble with them and we really covered the famous missionary David Brainer
15:51 --> 15:58 [SPEAKER_01]: was actually kind of almost, I think he was thrown out of school partially because he was a new light in the church, the school was hype, wasn't really interested in that.

16:05 --> 16:08 [SPEAKER_01]: At the same time, the new guys were not exactly kind to the old guard either.

16:33 --> 16:48 [SPEAKER_01]: And in 1740, he preached to following Sermon the one we're going to listen to against these men trying to reclaim control of their churches against the Great Awakening, and the Sermon was dangers of an unconverted ministry, and that's definitely a shot across the bow to those guys like, hey, I don't think you guys are saved.

17:30 --> 17:49 [SPEAKER_02]: Counts from his congregants, they don't quite paint that picture, so there was one man that said of him, and this was after a three-month series of sermons that Tinnit gave, and he said, quote, by his arousing and spiritual preaching, deep and pungent convictions were wrought in the minds of many hundreds of persons in that town.

21:04 --> 21:12 [SPEAKER_00]: Nothing should stir our hearts to sorrow and mourning more intensely than the tragic state of those who have no faithful ministry.
21:14 --> 21:20 [SPEAKER_00]: This heartbreaking truth is powerfully illustrated in the passage before us, where we see our Lord's own sorrow and the reasons for it.
21:21 --> 21:24 [SPEAKER_00]: We are told that Jesus was moved with compassion when he saw the people.
21:25 --> 21:33 [SPEAKER_00]: The original word used here describes the deepest, most intense kind of pity, something that comes from the very depths of his being.

21:48 --> 21:55 [SPEAKER_00]: The Pharisees were everywhere, trained under the finest scholars, well-versed in the laws, traditions, and teachings of the Jewish faith.
21:56 --> 21:59 [SPEAKER_00]: By all appearances, they were the spiritual leaders of the people.
22:00 --> 22:07 [SPEAKER_00]: Yet, despite the many so-called teachers, Jesus still mourned over the people as if they had none at all.

22:09 --> 22:14 [SPEAKER_00]: because in his eyes, these religious leaders were as good as useless.
22:15 --> 22:17 [SPEAKER_00]: They had knowledge, but no true wisdom.
22:18 --> 22:20 [SPEAKER_00]: They had authority, but no care for the flock.
22:21 --> 22:25 [SPEAKER_00]: They have a title of shepherds, but they did not lead, protect or nourish the sheep.
22:26 --> 22:36 [SPEAKER_00]: From the words of our text, we see this truth before us, the state of those who have no other teachers but Pharisee shepherds or unconverted ministers is truly pitiful.
22:38 --> 22:42 [SPEAKER_00]: First, let us consider the character of the old Pharisees' teachers.
22:42 --> 22:53 [SPEAKER_00]: Their most glaring qualities were pride, cunning, malice, ignorance, greed, and a blind devotion to human traditions in religious matters.
22:54 --> 22:57 [SPEAKER_00]: The old Pharisees were full of pride and self-importance.
22:57 --> 23:01 [SPEAKER_00]: They loved the best seats in the synagogues and craved the title of Rabbi.
23:02 --> 23:06 [SPEAKER_00]: They spoke with absolute certainty as if all knowledge would perish with them.
23:07 --> 23:16 [SPEAKER_00]: They look down upon those who differed from them, and they despise the common people, especially those who showed respect for Jesus and his teachings.
23:16 --> 23:20 [SPEAKER_00]: Anyone who honored Christ, they condemned as a cursed.
23:21 --> 23:24 [SPEAKER_00]: The Pharisee shepherds were also cunning as foxes.
23:24 --> 23:30 [SPEAKER_00]: They constantly scheme to trap Jesus with tricky questions, hoping to turn the authorities against him.
23:31 --> 23:39 [SPEAKER_00]: At the same time, they weren't secretly to win the favor of the ruling class while stirring up the people's anger against him and they succeeded in doing so, John 748.
23:40 --> 23:46 [SPEAKER_00]: Yet while they were crafty-like foxes, they were also cruel as wolves.
23:47 --> 23:52 [SPEAKER_00]: They spread vicious lies about Jesus, violently opposed his truth and persecuted his followers.
23:53 --> 24:05 [SPEAKER_00]: The most strict and zealous among them led these efforts as we see in Saul's journey to Damascus where he carried letters from the high priest to arrest and imprison any he found following the way.
24:06 --> 24:15 [SPEAKER_00]: At first, the Pharisees did not resort to open violence against Jesus and His disciples, not because of any goodness in them, but out of sheer political calculation.
24:16 --> 24:19 [SPEAKER_00]: They feared the people and needed to keep them under their influence.
24:20 --> 24:25 [SPEAKER_00]: That was their greatest concern, the guiding force behind all their actions.
24:25 --> 24:31 [SPEAKER_00]: They sought to destroy true living religion, but they found it beyond their grasp.
24:32 --> 24:39 [SPEAKER_00]: Although some of the old Pharisees sheepers had a very strict and outwardly respectable appearance, they were ignorant of the new birth.
24:40 --> 24:42 [SPEAKER_00]: Just look at Rabbi Nicodemus.
24:42 --> 24:45 [SPEAKER_00]: He spoke like a fool when trying to understand it.
24:46 --> 24:49 [SPEAKER_00]: Here, how are Lord denounced these hypocrites in Matthew 23 vs. 27 and 28?
24:52 --> 25:05 [SPEAKER_00]: woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, for you are like white wash tombs, which indeed appear outwardly beautiful, but inside are full of bed men's bones and all uncleaness.

25:52 --> 25:59 [SPEAKER_00]: worth noting that the Pharisee teachers in Christ's time were obsessed with small and trivial manners in religion.
26:00 --> 26:16 [SPEAKER_00]: In Matthew 23, 23, Jesus declares, wall to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, for you pay the tithe of mint and annus and cumin, but you neglected the way to your matters of the law, justice, mercy and faith.
26:17 --> 26:20 [SPEAKER_00]: The Pharisees were filled with a blind partisan zeal.
26:20 --> 26:28 [SPEAKER_00]: They would cross land and sea to make a single convert, and yet once they had done so, they made him twice as much a child of hell as themselves.
26:29 --> 26:39 [SPEAKER_00]: They were enslaved to human traditions and religious matters, even Paul before his conversion was passionately zealous for the traditions of the fathers.
26:47 --> 26:57 [SPEAKER_00]: and what great respect they pretended to have for the Sabbath, so much so that Christ and His disciples were accused of breaking it simply for doing works of mercy and necessity.

27:01 --> 27:06 [SPEAKER_00]: Their concern was not truly for the Sabbath, but rather for their malice against Christ.

27:14 --> 27:24 [SPEAKER_00]: and how loudly they professed to love the Pious prophets who had died long before they were born while at the same time they were persecuting the prince of prophets himself.

27:31 --> 27:44 [SPEAKER_00]: Well, unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, because you build the tombs of the prophets, and adorn the monuments of the righteous, and say, if we had lived in the days of the prophets, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets.

28:22 --> 28:23 [SPEAKER_00]: Every one of them has an evil heart.
28:23 --> 28:26 [SPEAKER_00]: For no corrupt source can produce what is holy.
28:27 --> 28:31 [SPEAKER_00]: Are not wicked men forbidden from meddling in such things?
28:31 --> 28:42 [SPEAKER_00]: As Psalm 50 verse 16 declares, but unto the wicked God says, what right have you to declare my statutes or to take my covenant into your mouth?
28:43 --> 28:59 [SPEAKER_00]: Now, are not all unconverted men wicked, does not our Lord Jesus Himself tell us in John 10 verse 1, He who does not enter by the door under the sheepfold, but climbs up some other way is a thief and a robber.

29:24 --> 29:30 [SPEAKER_00]: Remarkable is that saying of our Savior in Matthew 4 and 19, follow me and I will make you fishers of men.

29:36 --> 29:44 [SPEAKER_00]: Those who do not follow Christ may diligently seek a good reputation or worldly gain, but they will not labor for the true conversion of sinners to God.

30:22 --> 30:36 [SPEAKER_00]: It is true that men put themselves into ministry out of unfaithfulness or error, they may be drawn by desire for status or wealth, and the devil may drive them into it knowing from long experience how useful such men can be in furthering his kingdom.

30:41 --> 30:48 [SPEAKER_00]: This is why the Apostle Paul instructed Timothy to entrust the work of ministry to faithful men second Timothy 22.

31:29 --> 31:38 [SPEAKER_00]: For as it was in the past so it is now, he who was born according to the flesh persecutes him who was born according to the Spirit.

31:44 --> 31:50 [SPEAKER_00]: The only difference is that it may be disguised with clever words and polished speech.

32:10 --> 32:15 [SPEAKER_00]: And since they are not sent by God, they lack the divine authority that Christ's true messengers have.

32:23 --> 32:36 [SPEAKER_00]: Heresy teachers having never experienced the transferring work of the Holy Spirit in their own hearts are neither inclined nor equipped to speak frequently, clearly or passionately about such vital matters.

32:40 --> 32:52 [SPEAKER_00]: vague or overly general, they fail to distinguish the righteous from the wicked and do not properly divide the word to give each person what they need as Paul instructed Timothy to do.

33:39 --> 33:48 [SPEAKER_00]: Sometimes these Pharisees' teachers go to great lengths to strike fear into the hearts of the righteous, making sorrowful those whom God does not intend to grieve.
33:48 --> 33:54 [SPEAKER_00]: This often happens when faithful believers begin to suspect their hypocrisy.
33:55 --> 34:03 [SPEAKER_00]: Something they have good reason to do, because these unconverted teachers seek righteousness as if it comes through works of the law.

34:22 --> 34:33 [SPEAKER_00]: In doing so, these blind guides lead the world to trust in a false foundation, their own righteousness, while shutting them out from Christ, the only true redeemer.
34:34 --> 34:39 [SPEAKER_00]: Since the actions of unconverted men do not come from faith, love or a renewed heart and are
34:41 --> 34:50 [SPEAKER_00]: God's glory as their highest aim, but rather flow from and return to self, there works to utterly sinful in God's sight.
