[00:00:00] Revived Thoughts is a production of Revive Studios.

[00:00:06] This is Troy Angel and you are listening to Revived Thoughts.

[00:00:12] You surround us with your shield, and your protection is our crown.

[00:00:23] Your shield is our crown. It is our triumph.

[00:00:27] For the crown is the symbol of victory.

[00:00:31] Every episode we bring you a different voice from history

[00:00:34] and a sermon that they delivered today.

[00:00:37] We're going back to the 5th century, early 5th century,

[00:00:40] to hear a sermon from Jerome.

[00:00:42] It's titled Psalms 5.

[00:00:44] Troy, how are you doing?

[00:00:48] I'm doing well. I got caught in a very, very heavy rainstorm

[00:00:52] in a run earlier today.

[00:00:53] So that kind of like, it was like running through a tropical hurricane basically

[00:00:58] for 10 minutes, and then as soon as I got home it stopped raining.

[00:01:01] So that kind of wiped me out, but honestly things are going very well.

[00:01:05] It's one of those very busy but a lot of good things happening

[00:01:08] I feel like seasons for us over here.

[00:01:10] How are you doing Joel?

[00:01:11] I'm doing pretty good.

[00:01:13] What's your go-to shoe drying technique?

[00:01:16] Do you have a system in place?

[00:01:18] I currently have my shoes which were soaked.

[00:01:21] I don't think you could have put me in a shower

[00:01:24] and made me wetter than I was from that run.

[00:01:27] I currently have them drying on a chair with a fan right next to them.

[00:01:30] So we're hoping that that will do the trick.

[00:01:32] However, the fan doesn't tilt down perfectly,

[00:01:35] so it's like blowing air right across the top of them.

[00:01:38] So we'll see if that works.

[00:01:40] But I am a little bit worried because I have very large feet.

[00:01:43] I have American size 14 feet, and I live in a country that,

[00:01:47] I mean, if you were to find what would be an American size 12 somewhere,

[00:01:51] that would be considered a huge shoe.

[00:01:53] If my shoes were to fall apart, I would be in a bit of a tiff

[00:01:57] because I would not have any easy means of replacing these larger shoes.

[00:02:01] In fact, when we went to America, I had to buy a bunch of shoes,

[00:02:05] work shoes, workout shoes, regular shoes,

[00:02:08] and just kind of load up an entire suitcase of my shoes,

[00:02:11] which my wife was like, we're spending an entire suitcase

[00:02:13] just filling up these giant shoes and spending all the money.

[00:02:16] But if we don't get those shoes while we're in America while we can,

[00:02:19] I can't replace them, so I have to make them last.

[00:02:23] Prayerfully, the shoes dry out, everything's great,

[00:02:26] I don't have any major issues.

[00:02:28] But it was a fear.

[00:02:29] The entire time I was running, I was getting soaked,

[00:02:31] and all I could think about was like, oh no, these shoes.

[00:02:33] I hope they're okay.

[00:02:34] These poor shoes.

[00:02:35] The things you don't think about when you think about living overseas.

[00:02:38] Joel, we have had some positive responses

[00:02:41] of some recent episodes of Revive Thoughts,

[00:02:43] and we always try to read some of those responses as they come in.

[00:02:47] We have one from Twitter, aka X, whatever we call it.

[00:02:50] Yesi said, great episode of Revive Thoughts

[00:02:53] and shared our recent revived conversation,

[00:02:56] the Jonathan Edwards resolutions episode.

[00:02:58] Thank you so much for listening to the episode,

[00:03:00] and we're glad that you shared it

[00:03:02] and glad that you enjoyed that discussion that we have.

[00:03:04] We also had an email come in from a gentleman,

[00:03:07] and I really appreciated him.

[00:03:08] He was from New Zealand,

[00:03:09] and after kind of sending some emails back and forth,

[00:03:11] he told me if I'm ever in the part of New Zealand he's in,

[00:03:14] I've got a place that I can go visit,

[00:03:16] and he'll take care of me, which sounds great.

[00:03:18] I don't know if I can stay with him.

[00:03:20] I'm assuming that this means we are going to be hotel at his house.

[00:03:24] I don't see my Elver self.

[00:03:25] Now before he gets nervous,

[00:03:27] I don't know that I'm ever going to make it to New Zealand,

[00:03:28] but I do live on the same side of the world,

[00:03:30] so I guess it is theoretically possible.

[00:03:32] However, my favorite part is he opened his email.

[00:03:34] His name is Not Eric Rich,

[00:03:37] which I appreciate all of you who understand that reference.

[00:03:39] Thank you for keeping sending those in.

[00:03:41] Some of our new listeners might be going,

[00:03:42] what is that?

[00:03:43] It's an older episode, but we can't explain it.

[00:03:45] He said, I love church history,

[00:03:48] and your approach is both refreshing

[00:03:50] and a massive encouragement to my faith in Christ.

[00:03:52] He said some recent episodes have been a blessing are

[00:03:54] Bonhoeffer, Gideon is my Lord,

[00:03:56] Winslow, Time is in God's Hands,

[00:03:58] D.L. Moody, What Do You Think of Christ?,

[00:03:59] Woodrow Wilson, Post Mill President Part 1 and 2,

[00:04:02] and Luther, The Parable of the Unforgiven Servant.

[00:04:04] I really love about this, besides just,

[00:04:06] you know, thank you for the kind words,

[00:04:07] is that you're like, I love it.

[00:04:08] Here are just some recent episodes,

[00:04:10] and to me that sounded like all of our

[00:04:11] pretty much recent episodes.

[00:04:12] I was like, that's all of them right there.

[00:04:14] That's been most of the episodes.

[00:04:15] I'm glad that so many of them

[00:04:17] have been an encouragement to you.

[00:04:18] We also wanted to give a shout out on Patreon

[00:04:21] to Mike C.

[00:04:23] However, it says that he subscribed,

[00:04:25] he's back, and it was like, hey, Mike C is a Patreon.

[00:04:27] I went to kind of greet him,

[00:04:28] but then I looked over and he'd already been a Patreon.

[00:04:31] So Mike, I'm not sure if you were a Patreon

[00:04:33] and came back or if you just,

[00:04:35] something maybe in the system re-added you

[00:04:37] or your, I don't know what's going on there,

[00:04:39] but Mike, welcome aboard either way,

[00:04:41] one way or the other.

[00:04:42] We're happy that on some level you seem to be back.

[00:04:44] We're glad we didn't lose you, Mike.

[00:04:46] That's right, absolutely.

[00:04:48] Troy, Jerome, I feel like you're maybe

[00:04:51] poking the tiger a little bit with this one.

[00:04:53] We were talking before the show

[00:04:55] and you were saying how, you know,

[00:04:57] maybe you could have added a bit more balance

[00:05:01] to our episode today or so.

[00:05:04] What are your thoughts on Jerome

[00:05:06] and how we're gonna cover him?

[00:05:08] So I have to say with Jerome,

[00:05:10] this episode I was really focused on just his biography.

[00:05:14] I don't know his biography.

[00:05:16] I didn't know his life story

[00:05:17] and a lot of times when I'm starting with somebody,

[00:05:19] I kind of just go there.

[00:05:20] That's my kind of instinctual,

[00:05:21] like who are these people?

[00:05:22] And then over time, the more we cover a guy,

[00:05:24] the more I start to get into like specific controversies

[00:05:26] and things like that.

[00:05:27] So with Charles Spurgeon,

[00:05:28] we tend to get in the weeds

[00:05:29] and go like straight for certain things.

[00:05:30] And with people like Jerome

[00:05:31] that we've never had on the show,

[00:05:33] tend to do more of a life story take.

[00:05:35] However, at the end of the episode,

[00:05:36] I was telling Joel, I was like,

[00:05:37] I just don't feel like I covered his controversies

[00:05:40] because Jerome does get involved.

[00:05:41] Like when you hear the name Jerome,

[00:05:43] he is a controversial figure in church history

[00:05:45] and there's a lot of things

[00:05:46] and a lot of reasons people do it.

[00:05:48] And I was looking at the script,

[00:05:49] I was like, I just don't think I did a great job.

[00:05:51] So I do apologize to you.

[00:05:52] Normally I try to research

[00:05:53] and include some of those things

[00:05:54] so you get a taste of them.

[00:05:55] And it was not intentional.

[00:05:57] I wasn't trying to sugarcoat him or anything like that.

[00:05:59] It just, the way the script went

[00:06:01] was so biography focused.

[00:06:02] I just couldn't really,

[00:06:04] I didn't really feel like it fit with what we're doing.

[00:06:06] So the next time we cover Jerome,

[00:06:07] if you're waiting on edge of your seat going,

[00:06:10] I gotta hear Joy and Joel's take on these guys.

[00:06:13] We will hopefully,

[00:06:14] the next time we get around to Jerome,

[00:06:16] we will start covering

[00:06:17] some of the different controversial,

[00:06:18] more controversial sides of him.

[00:06:20] Yeah, if we get around to him,

[00:06:22] we might get canceled right here and now

[00:06:24] and this is the end of our five thoughts.

[00:06:26] But no, I really don't like that.

[00:06:28] That would be surprising, yeah.

[00:06:30] Yeah, no, we do occasionally cover

[00:06:33] controversial folks here on this show.

[00:06:35] It's kind of in the spirit of Revive Thoughts

[00:06:37] of we respect our listeners

[00:06:40] and we know that our listeners are smart people

[00:06:42] and formulate their opinions

[00:06:45] and have opinions on these things.

[00:06:47] We're just here to kind of help contextualize

[00:06:50] old church history

[00:06:51] and where these sermons took place

[00:06:53] and the audiences they took place at.

[00:06:54] So if you've never heard of Jerome,

[00:06:56] then this is a good introduction

[00:06:59] and you can dive into him a little bit more

[00:07:01] and let us know your thoughts.

[00:07:02] You always write it.

[00:07:03] We always love people to write it.

[00:07:04] ReviveThoughts at Gmail.com.

[00:07:06] Let us know your thoughts on Jerome

[00:07:09] if you have them

[00:07:10] and I assure you, the passionate people

[00:07:12] will probably let us know their thoughts on Jerome.

[00:07:14] Which again, we love, we welcome, we invite.

[00:07:17] Born in the year 347.

[00:07:20] So again, we're going way back.

[00:07:22] This is an older one in Croatia.

[00:07:24] This man was born.

[00:07:25] I think he might be our first Croatian person

[00:07:28] that we've ever had from that region.

[00:07:29] I can't think of any other person

[00:07:31] that I'm aware of.

[00:07:32] First Croatian.

[00:07:33] Thank you, Jerome.

[00:07:34] We finally got somebody from Croatia.

[00:07:35] We've been waiting so long.

[00:07:36] When he got old enough,

[00:07:37] his father sent him off to school in Rome

[00:07:40] in the year 366

[00:07:42] and he learned Graton.

[00:07:43] Graton.

[00:07:45] It's a new language, Graton, yeah.

[00:07:47] He had a fascination with linguistics

[00:07:50] at an early age

[00:07:52] and so he really got into Latin and Greek.

[00:07:55] He learned languages

[00:07:56] and he began translation work.

[00:07:58] He loved to copy down classic works

[00:08:00] and add them to his own collection.

[00:08:02] Just for fun, just personal.

[00:08:04] His personal library,

[00:08:05] building it out with translated works.

[00:08:07] In his early 20s,

[00:08:09] he went to the Roman capital,

[00:08:10] Gallic Providence,

[00:08:12] a town called Traer, I believe is how you pronounce that.

[00:08:15] Traer?

[00:08:16] Traer.

[00:08:17] Today it's called Trevis,

[00:08:19] if you're familiar with that area.

[00:08:21] This gave him access to really old writings

[00:08:24] that he was very excited about

[00:08:26] and he set up shop there

[00:08:28] and while researching

[00:08:30] and translating these old writings,

[00:08:33] he became fascinated with these stories

[00:08:35] of these old martyrs

[00:08:37] from what would have been

[00:08:39] 300, 400 years in his past at that point.

[00:08:42] He then afterward did a tour of Asia

[00:08:45] and ended up giving up studying Greek philosophy

[00:08:48] and shifting his studies completely over

[00:08:50] to these Christian writings

[00:08:52] that he loved and found so fascinating

[00:08:55] and working on translating scriptures themselves.

[00:08:58] At one point he lived for about five years

[00:09:01] in a desert as a monk

[00:09:03] in the desert of Asia.

[00:09:05] You know, Joel,

[00:09:06] we should do a revived conversation

[00:09:08] on these isolated desert monks.

[00:09:10] I know that sounds weird

[00:09:11] if you're listening right now,

[00:09:12] but I'm telling you,

[00:09:13] I think we could do an episode on that

[00:09:15] that would really be interesting to you

[00:09:17] because they have a perspective

[00:09:18] on material belongings

[00:09:20] that although I think is wrong,

[00:09:22] I also think that there were so many of them

[00:09:24] and it was such a thing for a while

[00:09:26] that I think you can still,

[00:09:28] there's something to be learned

[00:09:29] from the way they viewed material things.

[00:09:32] I put that on the docket

[00:09:33] for future revived conversation,

[00:09:35] the monks in the desert

[00:09:36] or something like that

[00:09:37] because I have a lot of thoughts on that.

[00:09:39] I've actually recently taught a class

[00:09:41] of my students on that

[00:09:42] and I feel like there is something

[00:09:44] to be learned from this phenomenon

[00:09:46] that happens in the fourth century.

[00:09:50] Jerome really struggled with missing Rome.

[00:09:53] He kind of grew up

[00:09:54] in a very privileged time to be in Rome.

[00:09:56] It was at the height of its prosperity.

[00:09:58] It's actually interesting, Joel,

[00:09:59] both this episode and the next episode

[00:10:01] are from people who came

[00:10:02] from very wealthy backgrounds

[00:10:04] who gave it all up

[00:10:05] and he really beat himself up too

[00:10:07] for missing the world.

[00:10:08] So he missed the worldly delights

[00:10:09] and he kind of beat himself up

[00:10:10] for missing them too.

[00:10:11] It kind of hurt his heart

[00:10:12] that he was so attached to these things.

[00:10:14] However, he got pulled out of the monk lifestyle

[00:10:16] because the priest of Antioch

[00:10:18] in the nearby region he was in

[00:10:20] continuously got into quarrels

[00:10:22] and could not figure out

[00:10:23] how to run the church

[00:10:24] and they kept having to drag him

[00:10:25] out of his seclusion

[00:10:27] to help them with another problem.

[00:10:29] These monks that lived out

[00:10:30] in the desert did these things

[00:10:32] by themselves in isolation

[00:10:33] were seen as really, really holy men

[00:10:35] and so when you were in trouble

[00:10:37] you would run to them

[00:10:38] and basically say,

[00:10:39] what do we do?

[00:10:40] But this happened so often

[00:10:41] eventually he kind of got tied down

[00:10:42] to the area so he became a priest,

[00:10:44] a freelancing priest.

[00:10:45] I've never even heard of that

[00:10:47] in all of our times doing this show

[00:10:48] but apparently he was a non-tied down priest

[00:10:51] he could kind of go where he pleased.

[00:10:52] He eventually went to Rome

[00:10:53] where he studied and worked

[00:10:55] with Gregory of Nazianzus

[00:10:56] who we've covered episodes on him

[00:10:58] big important name

[00:10:59] one of the Cappadocian fathers

[00:11:02] learn about him

[00:11:03] listen to our episodes on him

[00:11:05] and Jerome was just seen as a great writer

[00:11:07] he was really good at it

[00:11:08] he was brought to Rome

[00:11:09] to become a librarian and secretary

[00:11:11] he was considered top

[00:11:12] people thought he was going to be

[00:11:13] an ex-Pope

[00:11:15] the Pope really favored him

[00:11:17] commissioned him to create

[00:11:19] he commissioned him to create

[00:11:21] a Latin version of the Bible

[00:11:23] and put it into the common tongue

[00:11:26] at the time

[00:11:27] the Bible was still kind of in Koinonia

[00:11:29] Koinonia, oh my gosh

[00:11:30] Koinonia Greek

[00:11:31] and he was moving it to Latin

[00:11:34] the tongue of the people

[00:11:35] that actually they were speaking more of

[00:11:37] that was more of the common language

[00:11:38] at the time

[00:11:39] he had many friends too

[00:11:41] he had that monk background

[00:11:43] a great writer

[00:11:44] people really saw him as a potential future Pope

[00:11:46] but he had one thing against him

[00:11:48] and that was he enjoyed writing satirical attacks

[00:11:51] on the Roman clergy's hypocrisies

[00:11:54] like basically making fun of them

[00:11:56] and calling them out

[00:11:57] now of course that makes him really famous

[00:11:59] you know, the public loves this

[00:12:01] they're eating it up

[00:12:02] they love that he's calling out the clergy

[00:12:04] for their lack of sincerity

[00:12:06] but that makes you enemies

[00:12:08] when you do stuff like that

[00:12:09] people are kind of

[00:12:10] you know, they're getting their buttons poked

[00:12:11] he made some real enemies doing that

[00:12:12] Jerome himself was safe

[00:12:14] but when a patron that was over him died

[00:12:17] an investigation was made

[00:12:18] by his enemies against him

[00:12:20] and he was banished from Rome

[00:12:23] Jerome eventually made his way through Turkey

[00:12:26] and eventually over to Bethlehem

[00:12:28] and while he was at Bethlehem

[00:12:30] he met up with other

[00:12:31] kind of like-minded pilgrims

[00:12:33] that were coming through at the time

[00:12:34] and I guess he hit it off

[00:12:36] because they started a monastery together

[00:12:38] a little Bethlehem club

[00:12:40] is how I like to think about it

[00:12:42] and again, as Jerome does

[00:12:45] he sits down and starts writing

[00:12:47] and he gets some of his best work

[00:12:49] of his life done here in Bethlehem

[00:12:51] and in fact

[00:12:52] would kind of just end up spending

[00:12:54] the rest of his life here

[00:12:56] he translated the entire Old Testament

[00:12:58] into Latin

[00:12:59] which was the dominant common tongue

[00:13:01] of that time

[00:13:03] and got a good chunk of the New Testament

[00:13:05] done in Latin as well

[00:13:10] It's summer at the Home Depot

[00:13:14] and that means it's time to kick off

[00:13:40] How Doers Get More Done

[00:13:46] His crowning achievement would be

[00:13:48] this translating the Bible into Latin

[00:13:50] that's still kind of what he is famous for today

[00:13:53] However, as he was in Bethlehem

[00:13:55] the world just became kind of a riskier

[00:13:57] more dangerous place

[00:13:59] The Huns and pagan barbarians

[00:14:01] began to invade and destroy parts

[00:14:03] of the Roman Empire

[00:14:05] including Rome itself

[00:14:07] He would also have more public disputes

[00:14:09] with different theologians

[00:14:10] Him and Augustine specifically

[00:14:12] would kind of go at it back and forth

[00:14:14] and they would also

[00:14:16] kind of have a friendly relationship as well

[00:14:18] They wrote letters back and forth

[00:14:19] and we have some of these letters too

[00:14:21] so it's kind of interesting

[00:14:22] You don't usually have

[00:14:23] you know, these big famous theologians

[00:14:25] throughout history

[00:14:26] having like conversations with each other

[00:14:28] and we're kind of looking at them

[00:14:29] seeing them happen in real time

[00:14:30] It's kind of a unique aspect

[00:14:32] of Jerome and Augustine

[00:14:33] I'm afraid to say I've never looked at them

[00:14:34] but I'm very interested

[00:14:35] I'd like to look at them

[00:14:36] On top of that

[00:14:37] he would also go after

[00:14:38] big heretics during his day as well

[00:14:40] As many of these people did

[00:14:41] they were almost

[00:14:42] all of these people

[00:14:43] during this time period

[00:14:44] became famous

[00:14:45] because there was some heresy

[00:14:46] or some divisive leader

[00:14:48] that they were specifically targeting

[00:14:50] and Jerome had his as well

[00:14:52] Now, not all that he did was good

[00:14:54] Many people believed

[00:14:55] he pioneered an overly allegorical

[00:14:57] way of preaching

[00:14:58] That is when you look at the Scripture

[00:14:59] you see other images

[00:15:01] and symbolisms

[00:15:02] and things that just

[00:15:03] aren't natural readings

[00:15:04] of the text on any level

[00:15:05] It's not to say

[00:15:06] there are never symbols in the text

[00:15:08] but you're adding a lot more to it

[00:15:10] Instead of just seeing

[00:15:11] Jesus walking on water

[00:15:12] you're seeing Jesus

[00:15:13] walking the Christian nation

[00:15:15] walking across the nations

[00:15:16] that are the ocean

[00:15:17] or something like that

[00:15:18] This would become

[00:15:20] a very common way of preaching

[00:15:22] in the medieval era

[00:15:23] and many people

[00:15:24] kind of tie it back to Jerome

[00:15:25] and say Jerome was one

[00:15:26] of the founders of this idea

[00:15:27] He was not the only one

[00:15:28] but he was a big founder

[00:15:30] and pusher of this idea

[00:15:31] and it became very popular

[00:15:32] and it's just not a natural

[00:15:33] reading of the text

[00:15:34] and so he definitely gets

[00:15:35] a lot of discredit for that

[00:15:36] Outside of Augustine

[00:15:37] Jerome was actually

[00:15:38] the most prolific writer

[00:15:40] of this era

[00:15:41] whose books we have

[00:15:42] Augustine wrote the most

[00:15:43] from this era

[00:15:44] but Jerome was second most

[00:15:45] so you're number two

[00:15:46] behind one of the big names

[00:15:48] He also contributed

[00:15:50] This one was just random

[00:15:51] It's probably not even related

[00:15:52] It may not have even been

[00:15:53] appropriate for the script

[00:15:54] but it's not

[00:15:55] This is so weird

[00:15:56] He apparently helped contribute

[00:15:57] to the knowledge of vitamin A

[00:15:58] While he was starving himself

[00:15:59] as a monk out there

[00:16:00] he kind of noticed his symptoms

[00:16:03] and picked up on

[00:16:04] if I eat these certain foods

[00:16:05] I get better

[00:16:06] and if I don't

[00:16:07] I get sick

[00:16:08] and was able to kind of deduce

[00:16:09] He didn't know the name of it

[00:16:11] was vitamin A

[00:16:12] or anything like that

[00:16:13] as far as we can tell

[00:16:14] but he was able to deduce

[00:16:15] and figure out

[00:16:16] through his symptoms

[00:16:17] of the existence

[00:16:18] of this thing

[00:16:19] vitamin A

[00:16:20] that his body needed

[00:16:21] So just a little fun thing

[00:16:22] he did during his time

[00:16:23] as a monk

[00:16:24] Alright now listen to

[00:16:25] Jerome's sermon

[00:16:26] on Psalms 5

[00:16:28] and listen to this

[00:16:32] A sermon that's over

[00:16:34] 1600 years old

[00:17:04] I don't know why

[00:17:05] they hold such a view

[00:17:06] If the titles were not found

[00:17:08] in all the manuscripts

[00:17:09] Hebrew, Greek and Latin

[00:17:11] their position would be

[00:17:13] understandable

[00:17:15] Since however

[00:17:16] there are titles

[00:17:17] in the Hebrew books

[00:17:18] and this one in particular

[00:17:20] marks the 5th Psalm

[00:17:21] I am amazed at the implication

[00:17:23] that there can be anything

[00:17:24] in scripture without reason

[00:17:26] If it is true that

[00:17:28] not one jot or one tittle

[00:17:30] will be lost from the law

[00:17:32] how much more

[00:17:33] will not a word

[00:17:34] or a syllable be lost

[00:17:36] for the end of her

[00:17:38] that obtains the inheritance

[00:17:39] a Psalm of David

[00:17:41] Our inheritance

[00:17:42] is not promised

[00:17:43] at the beginning

[00:17:44] but at the end of the world

[00:17:46] The Jews thought

[00:17:47] they had obtained theirs

[00:17:48] at the beginning

[00:17:49] But we obtain ours

[00:17:50] at the end

[00:17:51] That is precisely why

[00:17:53] the Apostle John says

[00:17:54] Dear children

[00:17:55] it is the last hour

[00:17:57] The end means

[00:17:58] the last hour

[00:18:00] The inheritance

[00:18:01] is at the end

[00:18:03] For the end

[00:18:04] for her that obtains

[00:18:05] the inheritance

[00:18:06] Who is she

[00:18:07] who is to obtain

[00:18:08] the inheritance

[00:18:10] I believe it is

[00:18:11] the church

[00:18:12] For it is the church

[00:18:13] who receives the inheritance

[00:18:15] A Psalm of David

[00:18:17] David sings

[00:18:18] at the beginning

[00:18:19] that the church

[00:18:20] wins the inheritance

[00:18:21] at the end

[00:18:22] The 5th Psalm

[00:18:23] therefore

[00:18:24] sings in the name

[00:18:25] of the church

[00:18:26] There are however

[00:18:27] several other interpretations

[00:18:29] Many say that the Psalms

[00:18:30] accords with the history

[00:18:32] of the people of Israel

[00:18:33] who long to return

[00:18:34] to Judea from Babylon

[00:18:36] But they have failed

[00:18:37] to interpret

[00:18:38] for the end

[00:18:39] and for her

[00:18:40] that obtains

[00:18:41] the inheritance

[00:18:42] We then

[00:18:43] by combining

[00:18:44] spiritual with spiritual

[00:18:45] will endeavor

[00:18:46] with the help

[00:18:47] of your prayers

[00:18:48] to consider this Psalm

[00:18:49] as applying

[00:18:50] to the church

[00:18:52] Listen to my words

[00:18:53] O Lord

[00:18:54] No one has confidence

[00:18:56] like this

[00:18:57] except the church

[00:18:58] The sinner does not dare

[00:18:59] to say

[00:19:00] Listen to my words

[00:19:01] O Lord

[00:19:02] The man who is cursed

[00:19:04] in his rage

[00:19:05] does not dare say

[00:19:06] Listen to my words

[00:19:08] O Lord

[00:19:09] But he rather hopes

[00:19:10] that God

[00:19:11] will not hear him

[00:19:13] Attend to my cry

[00:19:14] The word cry

[00:19:15] in scripture

[00:19:16] does not refer

[00:19:17] to the cry of the voice

[00:19:18] but to the cry

[00:19:19] of the heart

[00:19:20] In fact

[00:19:21] the Lord says to Moses

[00:19:22] Why are you crying out

[00:19:24] to me

[00:19:25] when Moses had not

[00:19:26] uttered any cry

[00:19:28] at all

[00:19:29] Again

[00:19:30] the Apostle says

[00:19:31] Into our hearts

[00:19:32] crying

[00:19:33] Abba

[00:19:34] Father

[00:19:35] But you would say

[00:19:36] One who cries out

[00:19:37] does not cry out

[00:19:38] with the heart

[00:19:39] but with his tongue

[00:19:41] With what meaning

[00:19:42] then does the Apostle say

[00:19:43] Into our hearts

[00:19:44] crying

[00:19:45] When our lamentation

[00:19:46] and our conscience

[00:19:47] entreat the Lord

[00:19:48] this is the kind of cry

[00:19:49] that God heeds

[00:19:51] Likewise

[00:19:52] the words of Jeremiah

[00:19:53] Let there be no rest

[00:19:54] for my eyes

[00:19:55] Notice what he says

[00:19:56] Let not even the pupil

[00:19:57] of my eye

[00:19:58] be silent

[00:19:59] Sometimes

[00:20:00] the very pupil

[00:20:01] of our eye

[00:20:02] cries out

[00:20:03] to God

[00:20:04] But does one

[00:20:05] not cry out

[00:20:06] with his tongue

[00:20:07] and not with his eye

[00:20:08] No

[00:20:09] Just as we cry

[00:20:10] in our heart

[00:20:11] when we beg God

[00:20:12] with our groaning

[00:20:13] so too

[00:20:14] when we pour out

[00:20:15] our tears

[00:20:16] to God

[00:20:17] the pupil

[00:20:18] of our eye

[00:20:19] is crying out

[00:20:20] to the Lord

[00:20:21] But the word cry

[00:20:22] does not refer

[00:20:23] to the cry

[00:20:24] of the Lord

[00:20:25] My King

[00:20:26] and my God

[00:20:27] In truth

[00:20:28] only one

[00:20:29] who is no longer

[00:20:30] ruled by sin

[00:20:31] can dare say

[00:20:32] My King

[00:20:33] and my God

[00:20:34] Because you reign in me

[00:20:36] and sin does not

[00:20:37] that is why

[00:20:38] you are my God

[00:20:39] You are my God

[00:20:40] because my stomach

[00:20:41] is not my God

[00:20:42] gold is not my God

[00:20:43] lust is not my God

[00:20:44] since you are virtue

[00:20:45] and I desire to possess virtue

[00:20:46] you are my God

[00:20:48] At dawn

[00:20:49] you hear my voice

[00:20:50] Some preachers

[00:20:51] explain these words

[00:20:52] quite simply

[00:20:53] in this way

[00:20:54] I rise at dawn

[00:20:55] to pray

[00:20:56] and make supplication

[00:20:57] to you

[00:20:58] Certainly

[00:20:59] this interpretation

[00:21:00] is allowable

[00:21:01] But

[00:21:02] what does the verse

[00:21:03] really mean

[00:21:04] God hears our voice

[00:21:05] in the morning

[00:21:06] so will he not

[00:21:07] hear us

[00:21:08] in the evening

[00:21:09] but not

[00:21:10] in the middle

[00:21:11] of the night

[00:21:12] So

[00:21:13] my God

[00:21:14] you are my God

[00:21:15] You are my God

[00:21:16] and I desire

[00:21:17] to possess virtue

[00:21:18] and I desire

[00:21:19] to make supplication

[00:21:20] to you

[00:21:21] God hears our voice

[00:21:22] in the morning

[00:21:23] but not

[00:21:24] in the middle

[00:21:25] of the night

[00:21:26] Listen to what the words

[00:21:27] really mean

[00:21:28] As long as I am wandering

[00:21:29] in the darkness of error

[00:21:30] you do not hear me

[00:21:31] But after the sun of justice

[00:21:32] has come into my heart

[00:21:33] then you will

[00:21:34] At dawn

[00:21:35] you hear my voice

[00:21:36] The psalm does not say

[00:21:37] at the third hour

[00:21:38] nor at the sixth hour

[00:21:39] nor in the full daylight

[00:21:40] but

[00:21:41] at dawn

[00:21:42] Just as soon

[00:21:43] as the shades of night

[00:21:44] have gone

[00:21:45] you hear my voice

[00:21:46] Just as soon

[00:21:47] as I begin a good work

[00:21:48] you hear my voice

[00:21:49] You do not wait

[00:21:50] for the end

[00:21:51] It is mine

[00:21:52] to will

[00:21:53] and yours

[00:21:54] to accomplish

[00:21:55] At dawn

[00:21:56] I will stand before you

[00:21:57] and will see

[00:21:58] Notice the order

[00:21:59] At dawn

[00:22:00] not in the evening

[00:22:01] not in the darkness

[00:22:02] but at

[00:22:03] dawn

[00:22:04] At dawn

[00:22:05] I will stand before you

[00:22:06] I will stand steadfast

[00:22:07] I will imitate

[00:22:08] Moses

[00:22:09] At dawn

[00:22:10] I will stand

[00:22:11] before you

[00:22:12] I will stand

[00:22:13] before you

[00:22:14] I will stand before you

[00:22:15] and before no other

[00:22:17] Moreover

[00:22:18] when morning comes

[00:22:19] I will continue

[00:22:20] to be standing

[00:22:21] standing before you

[00:22:23] Then I will deserve

[00:22:24] to see you

[00:22:26] and will see

[00:22:28] It is understood

[00:22:29] of course

[00:22:30] I will see you

[00:22:31] For you

[00:22:32] O God

[00:22:33] delight

[00:22:34] not in the wickedness

[00:22:35] You will not hear me

[00:22:36] in the broad daylight

[00:22:37] but early in the morning

[00:22:38] because

[00:22:39] my God

[00:22:40] you do not

[00:22:41] will iniquity

[00:22:42] The very moment

[00:22:43] that I begin to withdraw

[00:22:44] from iniquity

[00:22:45] that very moment

[00:22:46] do I merit

[00:22:47] your attention

[00:22:48] to my prayers

[00:22:50] No evil man

[00:22:51] remains in you

[00:22:52] Whenever

[00:22:53] an evil man

[00:22:54] leaves us

[00:22:55] we ought to rejoice

[00:22:56] It will be with us

[00:22:57] as with the Lord

[00:22:58] That an evil man

[00:22:59] does not live

[00:23:00] with us

[00:23:01] any more

[00:23:02] than he would dwell

[00:23:03] with the Lord

[00:23:04] Hear what the Holy Spirit says

[00:23:05] No evil man

[00:23:06] remains with you

[00:23:08] The wicked

[00:23:09] will not remain

[00:23:10] with you

[00:23:11] What fellowship

[00:23:12] has light

[00:23:13] with darkness

[00:23:14] What harmony

[00:23:15] is there

[00:23:16] between Christ

[00:23:17] and Baal

[00:23:18] So when any

[00:23:19] of the wicked

[00:23:20] part from our company

[00:23:21] we too will say

[00:23:22] They have gone out

[00:23:23] from us

[00:23:24] but they were not

[00:23:25] of us

[00:23:26] For if they had been

[00:23:27] of us

[00:23:28] they would surely

[00:23:29] have continued

[00:23:30] with us

[00:23:32] The words

[00:23:33] No evil man

[00:23:34] remains with you

[00:23:35] are addressed to God

[00:23:36] For if God

[00:23:37] is fire

[00:23:38] and a consuming fire

[00:23:39] everyone

[00:23:40] who is stubble

[00:23:41] everyone

[00:23:42] who is wood

[00:23:43] runs away

[00:23:44] from the fire

[00:23:45] that he is not consumed

[00:23:47] The arrogant

[00:23:48] may not stand

[00:23:49] in your sight

[00:23:50] Since the scriptures

[00:23:51] say they may not stand

[00:23:52] it is obvious

[00:23:53] that at some time

[00:23:54] they were in the presence

[00:23:55] of God

[00:23:57] God permitted them

[00:23:58] to remain in the sight

[00:23:59] while he was waiting

[00:24:00] for them to repent

[00:24:02] But because they held out

[00:24:03] in their wickedness

[00:24:04] they could not remain

[00:24:05] before him

[00:24:07] You hate all evil doers

[00:24:08] Unhappy is the man

[00:24:09] whom God hates

[00:24:11] Whom does God hate?

[00:24:12] The evil doer

[00:24:14] But if we are all sinners

[00:24:15] and every sinner

[00:24:16] is hated by God

[00:24:17] it would naturally fall

[00:24:18] that we are all

[00:24:19] hated by God

[00:24:21] If however

[00:24:22] we are all hated by God

[00:24:23] how is it

[00:24:24] that we have been

[00:24:25] saved by grace?

[00:24:27] You hate all evil doers

[00:24:29] The psalmist did not say

[00:24:30] those who have been guilty

[00:24:31] of wrongdoing

[00:24:33] but those who are wrong

[00:24:34] doers

[00:24:36] Those who persevere

[00:24:37] in sin

[00:24:38] are those who are

[00:24:39] held in abhorrence

[00:24:40] by God

[00:24:42] But those who abandon

[00:24:43] the ways of sin

[00:24:44] are loved by God

[00:24:46] You hate all evil doers

[00:24:48] These words are intended

[00:24:49] for sinners

[00:24:50] who are persisting

[00:24:51] in sin

[00:24:53] Let us look at the next verse

[00:24:55] You destroy all

[00:24:56] who speak falsehood

[00:24:58] I find a new thought

[00:24:59] in these words

[00:25:00] The worker of evil

[00:25:01] is hated by God

[00:25:02] The liar perishes

[00:25:04] Let us see now

[00:25:05] which is the worst state

[00:25:06] to be hated by God

[00:25:08] or to perish

[00:25:10] The man whom God hates

[00:25:11] is unhappy indeed

[00:25:12] for he exists

[00:25:13] in the enmity of God

[00:25:15] Nevertheless

[00:25:16] he is still alive

[00:25:18] but the liar

[00:25:19] who is destroyed

[00:25:20] has ceased to exist

[00:25:22] The man who lies

[00:25:23] is in a worse state

[00:25:25] therefore

[00:25:26] than the one who does evil

[00:25:28] Though the evil doer

[00:25:29] is subject to the hatred of God

[00:25:30] the liar

[00:25:31] perishes altogether

[00:25:33] A lying mouth

[00:25:34] slays the soul

[00:25:36] What meaning is there

[00:25:37] further to the words

[00:25:39] For God is true

[00:25:40] and every man

[00:25:41] is a liar

[00:25:43] If everyone who utters a lie

[00:25:44] has already destroyed his soul

[00:25:46] and all of us are liars

[00:25:48] are we all going to perish

[00:25:50] What scripture says

[00:25:51] in the words

[00:25:53] You destroy all

[00:25:54] who speak falsehood

[00:25:56] We should interpret

[00:25:57] as referring to heretics

[00:25:59] both from the forward movement

[00:26:00] of the psalm

[00:26:01] and from the order

[00:26:02] within the movement itself

[00:26:04] The doer of evil

[00:26:05] has indeed

[00:26:06] killed his own soul

[00:26:08] But the heretic

[00:26:09] the liar

[00:26:10] has killed as many souls

[00:26:12] as he has seduced

[00:26:14] You destroy all

[00:26:15] who speak falsehood

[00:26:17] But who are these people

[00:26:18] who speak falsehood

[00:26:20] The bloodthirsty

[00:26:21] and the deceitful

[00:26:22] the Lord of Wars

[00:26:23] Every heretic

[00:26:24] is bloodthirsty

[00:26:25] For every day

[00:26:26] he spills the blood

[00:26:27] of souls

[00:26:28] The bloodthirsty

[00:26:29] are the deceitful

[00:26:31] Deceitful

[00:26:32] is the right word

[00:26:33] He is both a murderer

[00:26:34] and a practitioner

[00:26:35] of deceit

[00:26:37] How is he deceitful

[00:26:38] His words deliberately

[00:26:40] misrepresent

[00:26:41] the words of the Lord

[00:26:43] The bloodthirsty

[00:26:44] and the deceitful

[00:26:45] the Lord of Wars

[00:26:46] Just think of the condition

[00:26:47] of the heretic

[00:26:48] The Lord of Wars him

[00:26:51] The psalm

[00:26:52] says

[00:26:53] of sinners

[00:26:54] You hate

[00:26:55] all evil doers

[00:26:56] Of false teachers

[00:26:57] the Lord of Wars them

[00:26:59] But I because of your abundant

[00:27:00] kindness

[00:27:02] will enter

[00:27:03] your house

[00:27:04] The wicked in their iniquity

[00:27:05] depart from your house

[00:27:07] I by your mercy

[00:27:08] shall enter

[00:27:09] your house

[00:27:11] I will enter your house

[00:27:13] which is the church

[00:27:15] I will worship

[00:27:16] at your holy temple

[00:27:18] in fear of you

[00:27:20] The church

[00:27:21] is your house

[00:27:22] also your temple

[00:27:24] O Lord because of my enemies

[00:27:26] guide me in your justice

[00:27:28] Indeed do I long

[00:27:29] to enter your house

[00:27:30] and I desire to enter it

[00:27:31] by your way of justice

[00:27:33] Because my enemies

[00:27:34] are continually besetting

[00:27:36] my path with snares

[00:27:37] and setting traps for me

[00:27:39] all along the way

[00:27:40] while my one longing

[00:27:42] is to enter your house

[00:27:44] I am begging you

[00:27:45] to keep my feet

[00:27:46] firm in your path

[00:27:48] to the very end

[00:27:50] It is mine

[00:27:51] to set my feet

[00:27:52] in your way

[00:27:54] It is yours

[00:27:55] to direct my step

[00:27:57] Because my enemies

[00:27:58] make straight your way

[00:27:59] before me

[00:28:01] on account of the enemies

[00:28:02] who seek to ensnare me

[00:28:04] Which is this way

[00:28:06] of yours

[00:28:07] The reading

[00:28:08] of Holy Scripture

[00:28:09] Direct my steps therefore

[00:28:11] so that I do not stumble

[00:28:13] in the reading

[00:28:14] of your word

[00:28:15] For through reading

[00:28:16] your word

[00:28:17] I desire

[00:28:18] to enter your church

[00:28:19] For everyone

[00:28:20] who has a faulty

[00:28:21] understanding

[00:28:22] of the holy word

[00:28:23] falls down

[00:28:24] in the path of God

[00:28:26] For in their mouth

[00:28:27] there is no sincerity

[00:28:29] This is the description

[00:28:30] of heretics

[00:28:31] The heretic

[00:28:32] is bloodthirsty

[00:28:33] and deceitful man

[00:28:34] whom the Lord abhors

[00:28:36] In their mouth

[00:28:37] there is no sincerity

[00:28:38] Heretics do not have Christ

[00:28:39] the truth on their lips

[00:28:41] because they do not have him

[00:28:43] in their hearts

[00:28:44] Their heart is vain

[00:28:46] The Hebrew text is better here

[00:28:47] Their heart is treacherous

[00:28:49] For truly the heart

[00:28:50] of the heretic

[00:28:51] lies in wait

[00:28:52] for all whom

[00:28:53] he may ensnare

[00:28:55] Their throat

[00:28:56] is an open grave

[00:28:58] Heretics are unhappy men

[00:29:00] They are white tombs

[00:29:01] full of dead men's bones

[00:29:03] Their throat

[00:29:04] is an open grave

[00:29:06] Arius, Enomius

[00:29:07] and other heretics

[00:29:09] have tongues like arrows

[00:29:11] jaws like empty tombs

[00:29:13] Their throat

[00:29:14] is an open grave

[00:29:15] Open is well said

[00:29:16] For whenever

[00:29:17] anyone has been deceived

[00:29:19] enough to enter the tomb

[00:29:21] the heretic is ready

[00:29:22] to draw him right in

[00:29:24] The mouth of heretics

[00:29:25] are forever gaping

[00:29:27] Their throat

[00:29:28] is an open grave

[00:29:29] Their lips

[00:29:30] are like a dagger

[00:29:31] with their tongue

[00:29:32] They mean one thing

[00:29:33] in their heart

[00:29:34] but they promise another

[00:29:35] with their lips

[00:29:36] They speak with piety

[00:29:38] but conceal impiety

[00:29:40] They speak like Christ

[00:29:42] while they hide

[00:29:43] the Antichrist

[00:29:44] For they know

[00:29:45] that they will never succeed

[00:29:46] with their seduction

[00:29:47] if they do not

[00:29:48] hide their motives

[00:29:50] They present light

[00:29:51] only to conceal darkness

[00:29:53] and through light

[00:29:54] they lead one

[00:29:55] into darkness

[00:29:56] They flatter

[00:29:57] with their tongue

[00:29:58] Let them know

[00:29:59] that you are judge

[00:30:00] and that you

[00:30:01] are mindful

[00:30:02] of human affairs

[00:30:03] You are going to judge

[00:30:04] in the end

[00:30:05] Judge now

[00:30:06] also in the present

[00:30:08] You are to judge

[00:30:09] in general

[00:30:10] Judge now

[00:30:11] in particular

[00:30:12] Those who refuse

[00:30:13] to know the Father

[00:30:14] let them experience

[00:30:15] the judge

[00:30:16] Punish them

[00:30:17] O God

[00:30:18] And how?

[00:30:19] The answer follows

[00:30:20] Let them fall

[00:30:21] by their own devices

[00:30:23] If you repay them

[00:30:24] now

[00:30:25] in the present

[00:30:26] as they deserve

[00:30:27] they will begin

[00:30:28] to withdraw

[00:30:29] from their evil schemes

[00:30:30] As long as they do not

[00:30:31] experience you as judge

[00:30:32] they are without fear

[00:30:34] Let them fall

[00:30:35] by their own devices

[00:30:37] Excellently said

[00:30:38] By their own devices

[00:30:40] For heretics

[00:30:41] change or alter

[00:30:42] their doctrine

[00:30:43] from day to day

[00:30:44] In fact

[00:30:45] if a theologian

[00:30:46] learned in the scripture

[00:30:47] contends with them

[00:30:48] with proof

[00:30:49] from the sacred books

[00:30:50] what do they do

[00:30:51] but quickly

[00:30:52] turn around

[00:30:53] in search of a new doctrine

[00:30:54] They do not seek knowledge

[00:30:55] for the sake of salvation

[00:30:56] but look around

[00:30:57] for new doctrine

[00:30:58] to vanquish the opponent

[00:30:59] Here the psalmist said

[00:31:00] Let them fall

[00:31:01] by their own devices

[00:31:03] Let them fall away

[00:31:04] from their own

[00:31:05] countless opinions

[00:31:06] and let them have

[00:31:07] but one recourse

[00:31:09] You my God

[00:31:10] For there are many sins

[00:31:11] cast them out

[00:31:13] Now it does not say

[00:31:14] from which place

[00:31:15] God should cast

[00:31:16] out the wicked

[00:31:17] whether he should

[00:31:18] cast them out of heaven

[00:31:19] or from the face

[00:31:20] of the earth

[00:31:21] Scripture is not clear

[00:31:22] at this point

[00:31:23] because of the

[00:31:24] transposed word

[00:31:25] We have to read therefore

[00:31:26] For there are many sins

[00:31:27] cast them out

[00:31:29] But the meaning is

[00:31:30] because of your mercy

[00:31:31] cast them off

[00:31:32] from their many wickednesses

[00:31:35] Do not let them go

[00:31:36] on living

[00:31:37] in their many sins

[00:31:38] There is however

[00:31:39] another interpretation

[00:31:41] Because the wicked

[00:31:42] have been so thoroughly wicked

[00:31:43] they have not wanted

[00:31:44] to give up

[00:31:45] their evil schemes

[00:31:46] but they have gone on

[00:31:47] adding sin to sin

[00:31:49] and heaping up

[00:31:50] their sin daily

[00:31:52] And so their wickedness

[00:31:53] grows increasingly

[00:31:54] and for that reason

[00:31:56] they are to be cast out

[00:31:58] But cast them out

[00:31:59] from where?

[00:32:01] From her

[00:32:02] who obtains the inheritance

[00:32:04] That is from the church

[00:32:05] who obtains your inheritance

[00:32:07] Cast them out

[00:32:08] for they may not

[00:32:09] abide in the church

[00:32:10] since they do not

[00:32:11] have faith in her

[00:32:13] Because they have

[00:32:14] rebelled against you

[00:32:16] You are

[00:32:17] O Lord

[00:32:18] sweet by nature

[00:32:19] but sinners

[00:32:20] and heretics

[00:32:21] change the sweetness

[00:32:22] of your nature

[00:32:23] into bitterness

[00:32:24] because of their

[00:32:25] evil devices

[00:32:27] But let all

[00:32:28] who take refuge

[00:32:29] in you be glad

[00:32:30] Let sinners

[00:32:31] and heretics perish

[00:32:32] Let your churchmen

[00:32:33] be glad

[00:32:34] and exalt forever

[00:32:35] Here we ought to say

[00:32:36] something about eternity

[00:32:37] Not about the present

[00:32:38] but about the future world

[00:32:40] As a matter of fact

[00:32:41] the scripture did not say

[00:32:42] they rejoice in the present world

[00:32:44] as let them exalt

[00:32:46] implies the future world

[00:32:48] Here sorrow

[00:32:49] but then

[00:32:50] there will be true joy

[00:32:51] In the present world

[00:32:52] heretics laugh

[00:32:54] In the future

[00:32:55] they will lament

[00:32:57] We indeed lament

[00:32:58] in the present

[00:32:59] that we may rejoice

[00:33:00] in the future

[00:33:02] and exalt forever

[00:33:03] What will this joy

[00:33:04] of holy men be like?

[00:33:06] And you who will dwell

[00:33:07] with them

[00:33:08] they will be blessed

[00:33:10] and happy

[00:33:11] who deserve to possess

[00:33:12] Christ as their guest

[00:33:15] And you will dwell

[00:33:16] with them

[00:33:17] Happy are they

[00:33:18] who will become

[00:33:19] the tabernacles of Christ

[00:33:21] That you may be

[00:33:22] the joy of those

[00:33:23] who love your name

[00:33:24] Everyone who loves the Lord

[00:33:26] will exalt in the Lord

[00:33:28] See what it says

[00:33:30] That you may be

[00:33:31] the joy of those

[00:33:32] who love your name

[00:33:33] They who love

[00:33:34] Not they who fear

[00:33:36] but they who love

[00:33:38] Wherever there is fear

[00:33:40] love is absent

[00:33:42] For perfect love

[00:33:43] casts out fear

[00:33:44] Whoever loves

[00:33:45] the name of the Lord

[00:33:46] they will rejoice

[00:33:48] That you may be the joy

[00:33:49] Our beatitude

[00:33:50] is of the future

[00:33:51] to which alone

[00:33:52] the promise refers

[00:33:53] Let some rule with power

[00:33:56] Others possess wealth

[00:33:58] Still others receive

[00:33:59] honor and recognition

[00:34:01] We on the other hand

[00:34:02] are miserable in this life

[00:34:04] in order to be happy

[00:34:05] in the next

[00:34:07] Let us follow Christ our Lord

[00:34:09] He who says

[00:34:10] he believes in Christ

[00:34:11] ought himself also to walk

[00:34:13] Just as he walked

[00:34:15] Christ the Son of God

[00:34:16] has not come

[00:34:17] to be served

[00:34:18] but to serve

[00:34:19] He does not come

[00:34:20] to command

[00:34:21] but to obey

[00:34:22] He did not come

[00:34:23] to have his own feet washed

[00:34:25] but to wash the feet

[00:34:26] of his disciples

[00:34:28] He did not come

[00:34:29] to strike others

[00:34:30] but to be struck

[00:34:31] He did not give blows

[00:34:32] but receive them

[00:34:34] He did not crucify

[00:34:35] but was crucified

[00:34:37] He did not destroy

[00:34:39] but himself

[00:34:40] suffered destruction

[00:34:42] He was poor

[00:34:43] to make us rich

[00:34:44] He was scourged

[00:34:45] for our sake

[00:34:46] that we might escape

[00:34:47] scourging

[00:34:48] As often as we are struck

[00:34:49] let us offer our cheek

[00:34:51] to the blows

[00:34:52] Let us lay bare

[00:34:53] our backs

[00:34:54] to receive the stripes

[00:34:56] Let us imitate Christ

[00:34:58] He who is struck

[00:34:59] with blows

[00:35:00] imitates Christ

[00:35:01] He who strikes

[00:35:02] imitates the Antichrist

[00:35:04] Now why do I say all this?

[00:35:06] To glorify

[00:35:07] the name of Christ

[00:35:09] in whatever

[00:35:10] we suffer in this life

[00:35:12] While we are talking

[00:35:13] while we are walking

[00:35:14] suddenly we are carried off

[00:35:15] I myself

[00:35:16] who speak to you today

[00:35:17] know not what tomorrow

[00:35:18] holds for me

[00:35:20] If a slight fever

[00:35:21] should come upon me

[00:35:22] where is that voice of mine?

[00:35:24] Where is my pride?

[00:35:25] Suddenly

[00:35:26] it has turned to ash

[00:35:28] Why are dust

[00:35:29] and ashes proud?

[00:35:31] We are nothing

[00:35:32] but dust and ashes

[00:35:34] For dust you are

[00:35:35] and to dust

[00:35:36] you will return

[00:35:38] And dust raises itself

[00:35:39] up against its maker

[00:35:41] The next words

[00:35:42] of the Psalm are

[00:35:43] For you will be

[00:35:44] For you will bless

[00:35:45] the just man

[00:35:47] You will bless

[00:35:48] the just

[00:35:49] in the future life

[00:35:51] O Lord

[00:35:52] you crown him

[00:35:53] with the shield

[00:35:54] of your good will

[00:35:56] In the world

[00:35:57] a shield is one thing

[00:35:58] and a crown is another

[00:35:59] But with God

[00:36:00] He himself

[00:36:01] is our shield

[00:36:03] And he himself

[00:36:04] is our crown

[00:36:05] He protects us

[00:36:07] as if

[00:36:08] he were a shield

[00:36:10] And as God

[00:36:11] he crowns us

[00:36:12] He is

[00:36:13] our shield

[00:36:14] And he

[00:36:15] is our crown

[00:36:16] So say

[00:36:17] scripture

[00:36:18] O Lord

[00:36:19] you crown him

[00:36:20] with the shield

[00:36:21] of your good will

[00:36:23] You surround us

[00:36:24] with your shield

[00:36:25] and your protection

[00:36:26] is our crown

[00:36:28] Your shield

[00:36:29] is our crown

[00:36:30] It is

[00:36:31] our triumph

[00:36:32] For the crown

[00:36:33] is the symbol

[00:36:34] of victory

[00:36:36] Let us give thanks

[00:36:37] to God

[00:36:38] and let us beg

[00:36:39] Him

[00:36:40] in his good will

[00:36:41] to be our shield

[00:36:43] and crown

[00:36:44] that we

[00:36:45] may never

[00:36:46] depart from him

[00:36:47] And that we

[00:36:48] may follow him

[00:36:49] and declare with Jeremiah

[00:36:51] I was not weary

[00:36:52] of following you

[00:36:54] To him

[00:36:55] be the glory

[00:36:56] forever

[00:36:57] and ever

[00:36:58] Amen

[00:37:06] I love this line here

[00:37:12] Every heretic

[00:37:13] is bloodthirsty

[00:37:14] for every day

[00:37:15] he spills the blood

[00:37:16] of souls

[00:37:17] And I just man

[00:37:18] It's true

[00:37:19] It's a great line

[00:37:20] It sticks with you

[00:37:21] And Jerome

[00:37:22] I think

[00:37:23] you know

[00:37:24] for all of the

[00:37:25] again we kind of talked at the top

[00:37:26] that there are some controversies around him

[00:37:27] For the controversies around him

[00:37:28] I don't think enough people

[00:37:29] have given him credit

[00:37:30] that he is just an excellent speaker

[00:37:32] He has a way

[00:37:33] with words

[00:37:34] and with saying things

[00:37:35] And I can see

[00:37:36] why he was such

[00:37:37] an effective

[00:37:38] preacher

[00:37:39] in his day

[00:37:40] And I just

[00:37:41] listening to the sermon

[00:37:42] reading through the sermon

[00:37:43] when I was editing it

[00:37:44] I just appreciated that

[00:37:45] you know

[00:37:46] he

[00:38:17] he did it

[00:38:20] Thank you for listening to today's episode of Revive Thoughts

[00:38:34] Today's sermon was narrated by Patrick Studebaker

[00:38:36] over from the Cave to the Cross podcast

[00:38:39] Listeners

[00:38:40] If you haven't checked out the Cave to the Cross podcast

[00:38:43] You really should

[00:38:44] It is

[00:38:45] right up our alley

[00:38:46] Like if you like Revive Thoughts

[00:38:48] You probably like

[00:38:49] Cave to the Cross podcast

[00:38:50] Yeah absolutely

[00:38:51] He loves to go over

[00:38:52] books

[00:38:53] and talk about apologetics

[00:38:54] He has great guests on

[00:38:55] He

[00:38:56] absolutely is worth your time

[00:38:57] Patrick has read

[00:38:58] multiples of episodes for us

[00:39:00] He has been really kind

[00:39:01] to our show throughout the years

[00:39:02] And we really encourage you

[00:39:03] If you are looking for another show

[00:39:05] If you're looking for a show

[00:39:06] that's interesting to you

[00:39:07] that has to do with apologetics

[00:39:09] and is you know

[00:39:10] gets pretty deep

[00:39:11] I highly recommend

[00:39:12] Cave to the Cross podcast

[00:39:13] as a show to go check out

[00:39:15] And you cannot meet a nicer person

[00:39:17] There cannot be a greater friend

[00:39:19] to our show than Patrick

[00:39:20] And so we really appreciate him

[00:39:22] And we really thank him

[00:39:23] for helping us with so many different episodes

[00:39:26] If you enjoyed this episode

[00:39:28] and you're thinking to yourself

[00:39:29] Hey I enjoy all these episodes

[00:39:31] by Revive Thoughts

[00:39:32] I love the sermons

[00:39:33] they're bringing back to life

[00:39:34] What can I do to help?

[00:39:35] Well hey

[00:39:36] We are always looking for

[00:39:37] people to read sermons for us

[00:39:39] And if you are interested

[00:39:40] in being one of these voices

[00:39:41] Each of these voices is a volunteer

[00:39:43] Each of these people

[00:39:44] who speak our show

[00:39:45] is a different person

[00:39:46] from around the world

[00:39:47] We've had people from all over

[00:39:49] from different backgrounds

[00:39:50] And some of them are radio hosts

[00:39:52] Some of them have been

[00:39:53] you know pastors and preachers

[00:39:54] of big congregations

[00:39:55] But many of them are

[00:39:56] just regular people

[00:39:57] who listen to the show

[00:39:58] enjoy the show

[00:39:59] and wanted to add their voice

[00:40:00] And if you are one of those people

[00:40:02] and you have a microphone

[00:40:04] or have access to a microphone

[00:40:05] We would love for you

[00:40:06] to send us an email

[00:40:07] at revivethoughts at gmail.com

[00:40:09] Or reach out to us

[00:40:10] through one of our social media pages

[00:40:12] And say hey

[00:40:13] I would be interested

[00:40:14] in reading these sermons

[00:40:15] Because we are always needing

[00:40:16] new volunteers to read sermons

[00:40:18] And we are always thankfully

[00:40:19] getting new volunteers

[00:40:21] and people who are adding

[00:40:22] to our list

[00:40:23] And we really appreciate that

[00:40:24] So thank you for listening
